Faunistic review of the cuckoo wasps of Fennoscandia, Denmark and the Baltic countries (Hymenoptera: Chrysididae)

Juho Paukkunen; Paolo Rosa; Villu Soon; Niklas Johansson

A critical and annotated review of published records of the Chrysididae of the Nordic and Baltic countries and the Russian part of Fennoscandia is presented with some taxonomic and faunistic notes. A total of 73 species are listed from the region. Additionally, 17 species are deleted. Three species are recorded for the first time from Denmark, six species from Estonia, one from Finland, eleven from Latvia, four from Norway, one from Sweden and 15 from Russian Fennoscandia. Elampus foveatus and Chrysis pulcherrima are reported for the first time from the Nordic and Baltic countries. Lectotypes are designated for Hedychrum cupreum Dahlbom, 1845, Chrysis zetterstedti Dahlbom, 1845, Chrysis succincta var. chrysoprasina Trautmann, 1927, Chrysis succincta var. virideocincta Trautmann, 1927 and Chrysis succincta var. nordstromi Trautmann, 1927. Information and images of the holotypes of Hedychrum metallicum Dahlbom, 1854, Chrysis var. westerlundi Trautmann, 1927 are given. Chrysis integra Dahlbom, 1829 is found to be a new synonym of Hedychridium ardens (Coquebert, 1801) and Chrysis scintillans Valkeila, 1971 a new synonym of Chrysis solida Haupt, 1957. Chrysis terminata Dahlbom, 1854 is reported for the first time as the valid name for C. ignita Form A sensu Linsenmaier, 1959.

An annotated checklist of the chrysidid wasps (Hymenoptera, Chrysididae) from China

Paolo Rosa; Na-sen Wei; Zaifu Xu

Abstract An annotated checklist of the Chinese Chrysididae is provided. The list includes 188 species and subspecies in twenty three genera of five subfamilies. Four species are proposed as new combinations: Hedychridium cupreum asianum (Linsenmaier, 1997), Philoctetes deauratus (Mocsáry, 1914), Philoctetes mordvilkoi (Semenov-Tian-Shanskij, 1932), and Pseudomalus hypocritus (du Buysson, 1893). Two species are revalidated: Chrysis consobrina Mocsáry, 1889, and Philoctetes mongolicus (du Buysson, 1901). Historical data with comments on the current taxonomic position, and the pictures of sixty five types are also given.

An annotated catalogue of the types of Chrysididae (Hymenoptera) at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, Stockholm, with brief historical notes.

Paolo Rosa; Hege Vårdal

Abstract A critical and annotated catalogue of 72 types of Chrysididae (Hymenoptera) belonging to 53 species and subspecies housed in the Swedish Museum of Natural History is given. The lectotypes of Chrysis diversa Dahlbom, 1845, Chrysis soror Dahlbom, 1854, Chrysura sulcata Dahlbom, 1845 and Holopyga amoenula Dahlbom, 1845 are designated. The previous lectotype of Chrysis diversa Dahlbom, 1845 is set aside. Five new synonymies are proposed: Chrysis elegans var. smaragdula Trautmann, 1926 (currently Chrysis elegans ssp. interrogata Linsenmaier, 1959 repl. name for smaragdula Trautmann, nec Fabricius, 1775), syn. n. of Chrysis confluens (Dahlbom, 1845); Chrysis eximia Mocsáry, 1889, syn. n. of Chrysis poecila Mocsáry, 1889; Chrysis pyrrhina Dahlbom, 1845, syn. n. of Chrysis erythromelas Dahlbom, 1845; Chrysis separata Trautmann, 1926, syn. n. of Chrysis lateralis Dahlbom, 1845; Chrysis sicula Abeille de Perrin, 1877, syn. n. of Chrysis erythromelas Dahlbom, 1845. Chrysis serena Radoszkowski, 1891 is the first available name for Chrysis pyrrhina sensu auctorum. Chrysis erythromelas Dahlbom, 1845 is revaluated as valid species. The neotype of Chrysis inaequalis Dahlbom, 1845 is designated in the Linsenmaier collection (NMLS). Illustrations of 34 types are given.

The Linsenmaier Chrysididae collection housed in the Natur-Museum Luzern (Switzerland) and the main results of the related GBIF Hymenoptera Project (Insecta)

Paolo Rosa; Marco Valerio Bernasconi; Denise Wyniger

Historical notes on Walter Linsenmaier, his entomological career and his Chrysididae collection are given. The purpose of this article is to supply the main results obtained during the GBIF digitalization project and the subsequent reorganization of the Chrysididae collection housed in the Natur-Museum Luzern (Switzerland); we also provide the complete list of the 720 taxa described by the Swiss author (species-group and genus-group names). Observations on the type material is given. A new synonymy (valid name is first) is proposed for: C. consanguinea Mocsáry, 1889 = C. consanguinea iberica Linsenmaier, 1959, syn. nov.; C. pyrophana Dahlbom, 1854 = C. pyrophana var. orionea Linsenmaier, 1951, syn. nov.; Hedychridium elegantulum du Buysson, 1887 = H. hybridum Linsenmaier, 1959, syn. nov.; H. perpunctatum Balthasar, 1953 = H. insequosum Linsenmaier, 1959, syn. nov.; Euchroeus (Pseudospinolia) incrassatus (Spinola, 1838) = E. (P.) humboldti jerichoensis Linsenmaier, 1959, syn. nov. A new replacement name Chrysis vulcanica Rosa, nom. nov. is proposed for Chrysis brevicollis Linsenmaier, 1987, nom praeocc., nec Mocsáry, 1899. The lectotype of Chrysis auriceps Linsenmaier, 1959 is designated.

An illustrated key to the cuckoo wasps (Hymenoptera, Chrysididae) of the Nordic and Baltic countries, with description of a new species.

Juho Paukkunen; Alexander Berg; Villu Soon; Paolo Rosa

Abstract The Chrysididae are a group of cleptoparasitic and parasitoid aculeate wasps with a large number of rare and endangered species. The taxonomy of this group has long been confusing due to the similarity of species and extensive intraspecific variation. We present for the first time a comprehensive dichotomous key for all 74 species found in the Nordic and Baltic countries. In addition to diagnostic characters, information on the distribution and biology of each species is also presented. A new species, Chrysis borealis Paukkunen, Ødegaard & Soon, sp. n. is described on the basis of specimens collected from Fennoscandia. Chrysis gracillima Förster, 1853 is recorded as new to the Nordic and Baltic countries.
