A review of 62 patients who underwent surgical treatment for xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is presented. Polar resection was performed in 3 cases with localized disease, while the remaining 59 patients were treated by nephrectomy. Preoperative diagnosis is still tentative, but the recent advances in imaging techniques and urinary cytology will provide greater accuracy in the future.

AbstractWe report 4 cases of renovascular hypertension secondary to renal trauma. Selective samples of plasma renin activity from the renal veins were obtained in all patients and demonstrated lateralization in 3. Surgery consisted of partial resection in 3 cases and nephrectomy in 1. Three patients were cured and 1 was improved by the surgical treatment.

Renal revascularization was performed using the internal iliac artery in 25 patients. The causes for arterial damage were fibrodysplasia in 19 cases, athero sclerosis in 5 and aneurysm in one. Simple autotransplantation was performed in 10 cases, and ex-situ repair with subsequent autotransplantation in 15. Mean postoperative followup was 5.2 years; renal volume, evaluated with planimetry in IVP, was improved in 65% of the cases. Sixty-eight percent of the patients were cured from hypertension, 28% improved and 8% remained unchanged.
