This study was designed to determine the effects of the selection for body weight and of two final warming durations during an out-of-season reproductive cycle on gonad recrudescence, plasma steroid levels and spawning in Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis males and females. Two different bodyweight classes (200–250 and 350–400 g) and two different warming periods (1 or 2 months) were studied.At the end of the chilling period, a significant effect of the selection for body weight was observed on gonad development whereas fish were the same age. According to higher levels in testosterone (12 ng mL−1), a better development was recorded for smaller breeders (P < 0.05). A short water warming period up to 14°C (1 month v.s. 2 months) allowed higher rates of females with completed gonadogenesis (33–38% v.s. 7–8%) and spawning (31–33% v.s. 0%) (P < 0.05). Spontaneous out-of-season spawning (17 ribbons) and larvae were obtained. Relative fecundity was about 100 eggs g−1 of female body weight. Five ribbons were partly fertilized with a rate ranging from 5 to 90%. These studies have shown that delayed spawning in Eurasian perch can be obtained by a temperature manipulation, but results are not sufficient because of low stimulation rate of females, low spawning rates and high heteroge-neity of fertilization rates. The effects of other environmental factors like photoperiod should be tested in further experiment to improve the protocol inducing out-of-season spawning production.

The effects of photoperiod regimes under ambient temperature on gonadal growth and spawning were investigated in Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis. This study showed that continuous lighting inhibited reproduction in male and female fish with very low sex steroid levels being measured. Constant LD 16:8 resulted in heterogeneous gonad development and sex steroid levels compared to natural regime, with only 54% of females and <u200930% of males maturing. Seasonal variations in daylength also seem to be required to control reproduction.

Abstract This study was designed to specify the testosterone (T), estradiol-17β (E 2 ) and 17,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20β-P) variations during the pre-ovulatory period in female Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis , and also examine the ovarian synthesis of 17,20β-P and 17,20β,21-trihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (20β-S). Five females (100–300 g) were collected from a concrete pond from the Lindre Center (Moselle, France) between March and April 1999, three times a week, and sex steroids measured. Two females were also collected from the Lindre pond on three dates (18 February, 14 and 23 March) for an in vitro study. Significant plasma 17,20β-P peaks were measured for the first time in this species reaching 3.5 ng ml –1 . However, the synthesis and release of 17,20β-P in blood seems to not be synchronized with the final maturation and ovulation stages. The in vitro study showed that ovaries at the pre-ovulatory stage produce some 17,20β-P but no 20β-S from a tritiated precursor (17-P- 3 H). 17,20β-P is produced after 30 min and is still present in the medium after 2 h of incubation, but is no longer detectable after 4 h. Some other non-identified compounds were synthesized at this stage suggesting that 17,20β-P was quickly metabolized. Moreover, the plasma level increases, observed in spawned females suggest that this steroid might be involved in the oviposition process. These results suggest a role for 17,20β-P in the final stages of oocyte development.

Perch breeders showed high mortality rates during the spawning season. This could be linked to immunosuppressive effects of environmental conditions or reproduction.

Abstract A host of abiotic factors modify fish social behavior. However, few studies have characterized the effects of temperature on behavior. In this study, brown trout Salmo trutta fry were reared at 5 different temperatures (4°C, 6°C, 8°C, 10°C, and 12°C). In order to characterize group structure, 3 behavioral parameters were investigated: group social structure (based on inter-individual distances), inter-individual relationships (based on physical contacts), and individual activity. These behavioral parameters were studied at the emergence stage, which corresponds to a switch from a social gregarious life in the gravel to a solitary one in the water column. Data analysis showed that the inter-individual distances increased with increasing temperature, particularly the nearest neighbor distance. The mean number of physical contacts between fry increased at both low and high temperatures. At high temperatures, most fry moved apart from each other after a physical contact. Swimming activity decreased at both the lower and upper temperatures (18% of activity at 4°C, 38% at 8°C, and 12% at 12°C). This study showed that temperature modifies brown trout fry activity, inter-individual relationships, and social behavior, which all affect group cohesion before emergence and can influence their survival and dispersal.

High mortality and impairment in growth rate during pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) ongrowing are among the major bottlenecks for its development in aquaculture. These failures may be related to high stress responsiveness since the rearing conditions are not yet optimized for this species. The objectives were to characterize the stress and immunological responses of pikeperch to major aquaculture modalities, and to identify the optimal aquaculture conditions for improving its welfare status. In a screening experiment, eight factors considered as relevant for the welfare of pikeperch were compared in two modalities using a fractional multifactorial design (28-4). Each experimental unit represented a combination of 8 factors in two modalities including grading, stocking density (15 vs 30kg·m-3), feed type (sinking vs mid-floating), light intensity (10 vs 100 lux), light spectrum (red vs white), photoperiod (long vs short), dissolved oxygen (60 vs 90%) and temperature (21 vs 26°C). Fish sampling occurred on days 36 and 63. Stress markers (glucose, cortisol and brain serotonergic activity), innate immune parameters (plasma lysozyme and complement activities) and expression of some immune genes were assessed. Light intensity and the type of feed clearly appeared as directive factors for pikeperch culture. A strong effect of the feed type was observed on growth parameters while survival was impacted by high light intensity. Light characteristics (intensity, spectrum and photoperiod) and temperature were identified as determining factors for physiological and immune markers. No obvious relation was established between stress status and growth parameters and further investigations are needed to improve management strategies of pikeperch culture and knowledge on the relations between environmental conditions, stress and immunity in percid fish.
