BACKGROUND: The prevalence of skin cancer is rising worldwide. It is important to know the level of understanding of the population in the city of Recife. OBJECTIVE: Faced with the lack of statistical data on the knowledge and prevention of negative effects of sun exposure and especially skin cancer, an epidemiological study was carried out on members attending the main gyms located in the city of Recife. The study aimed at assessing their knowledge about skin cancer and its prevention. METHOD: Five hundred questionnaires comprising 22 items were applied to obtain data on each individual, notably age, sex, family income, educational level and behavior regarding sun exposure. Karl Pearsons chi-square test was applied for the statistical analysis. The frequency of similar replies was grouped in graphs and tables that allowed a discussion and comparison of the results with the literature. RESULTS: Of the females in the sample, the majority were under 40 years of age. There were more whites than blacks and family income was over 10 times the Brazilian legal minimum wages. CONCLUSION: The majority knew about the risks and damage associated with sun exposure as well as the means to protect the skin, nevertheless, those interviewed exposed themselves to these risks, but adopted various protective measures.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma found in young adults. It is rarely confined exclusively to the skin and subcutis. In most cases it is only diagnosed after excision and analysis of the tumor. It is aggressive, presenting a high degree of local recurrence and metastasis. This article reports a case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma on an extremity of a young adult patient.

Cowdens Syndrome (CS) or Multiple Hamartoma Syndrome (MHS) is a rare genodermatosis of autossomal-dominant inheritance with variable expressivity. It is characterized by multiple hamartomatous lesions of ectodermal, mesodermal and endodermal origins. The organ system that most consistently manifests this syndrome is the skin. Mucocutaneous lesions are present in 99 to 100% of cases. These signs precede the development of cancer by several years, and they serve as important clinical markers for identification of patients at high risk for malignancies of the breast or thyroid. Because of its potentially serious associations with internal malignancy, early and accurate diagnosis is essential. The gene locus for CS has been identified as chromosome 10 q22-23. Mutations in the human tumor suppressor gene, PTEN/MMAC1, located on the 10q23 chromosome, have been implicated in the development of breast cancer. The authors report a case of this rare entity, dealing with a male patient with the clinical characteristics of this syndrome.

Relapsed cases of leprosy are not common in patients treated regularly with the recommended polychemotherapeutical schemes. Relapses must be readily identified and distinguished from reactions. This article reports a clinical case of relapse in leprosy, with atypical and exuberant skin changes in patient treated for eleven years with a paucibacillary scheme.
