Reading and writing are presented as a communication system in which the reader/writer functions as a meaning maker. This view implies that the goal of reading and writing instruction is the same‐‐to teach effective communication, and that the best way to accomplish this goal is to teach reading and writing together. Activities that have been developed to teach reading and writing together within the context of basal materials are described, and an example is provided of how these activities were used in a second grade class.
