Bicycle Attachments for Children: Bicycle Seats, Trail-a-bikes, and Trailers

62 Volume 23 Number 1 Bicycling is a very popular recreational sport, with approximately 85 million bicycle riders in the United States (Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, 2004). Many of these riders include families who enjoy cycling together. As a result, many cycling products have been developed to help incorporate young children into family bicycling outings. Products marketed toward children and families include bicycle seats, trail-a-bikes, and bicycle trailers. This article will describe these three products, highlight the advantages and disadvantages of using these attachments, explain the safety implications, and discuss the role of the nurse practitioner (NP). With this information, NPs will be able to counsel families regarding bicycle attachment products, discuss safety and accident prevention, and help families continue cycling recreationally.
