Using video to re-present the user

Francoise Brun-Cottan; Patricia Wall

Advocates of user-centered design and participatory design, also referred to as “work practice practitioners” include computer scientists, systems designers, software engineers, social scientists, industrial and graphic designers, marketing, sales, and service personnel. Working singly or in teams, we have been identifying and combining effective techniques and methods of: gathering data, interacting with user participants, representing activities and observations, and integrating findings with the design and construction of new technologies.

The future of knowledge work: predictions for 2020

Jennifer Perotti; Patricia Wall; Gabriele McLaughlin

Purpose – This paper aims to describe findings from a study of current leading edge knowledge workers and to discuss the challenges and issues that knowledge workers may face in 2020, as the world of work shifts into a knowledge economy.Design/methodology/approach – This is a discussion paper inspired by findings from an ethnographic study of knowledge workers who worked remotely or on the go, using leading edge technology like smart phones.Findings – Todays knowledge workers have a need for better information integration across devices and sources. They struggle to maintain ubiquitous access to electrical power and the internet, and they find it difficult to integrate multiple formats of incoming information into their digital landscape. It is expected that the problems of information integration and infrastructure access will be solved by 2020. However, the paper predicts that knowledge workers of the future will face the daunting task of making sense of vast amounts of incoming information, once they ...

Managing Interactions in the Collaborative 3D DocuSpace for Enterprise Applications

Tong Sun; Jonas Karlsson; Wei Peng; Patricia Wall; Zahra Langford

A novel system is proposed in this paper to manage the interactions in the context of document contents to enhance user collaboration experiences. By explicitly capturing, tracking and analyzing the document interactions in the collaborative 3D space, the system can provide instant feedback to influence users’ behaviors and/or enable the adaptive contents. Furthermore, the proposed system can persistent these document interactions to content repository for selective and contextual “replay” or “review”.

Capturing and sharing stories in virtual and interactive web environments: a cross-organizational case study

Patricia Wall; Jonas Karlsson; Johannes A. Koomen; Tong Sun; Eric A. Bier; Margaret H. Szymanski

This case study describes the collaboration between Xerox Research and The Henry Ford Museum to explore ways to enable museum staff and visitors to interact with artifacts and each other in online environments. Building on the premise that stories are an integral part of the museum experience, the team developed prototype technologies, initially for use by the museum staff, to create stories around collection elements and enable story sharing and collaboration in 3D immersive environments. Ongoing feedback and evaluations by the museum staff guided prototype revisions. Suggestions by the museum staff for use of the prototypes in museum and educational contexts are also discussed.
