Current data on the characterization of oral clefts in Brazil

This study aimed at investigating the current distribution of the several types of clefts among the patients receiving treatment at the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies (HRAC-USP), Bauru, Brazil, for the first time during the year 2000. A total of 803 unoperated patients with cleft lip and/or palate, with or without additional malformations, with no recognizable syndromes, who came to the HRAC-USP for enrollment for treatment during the year 2000. A predominance of complete cleft lip and palate, either unilateral or bilateral, was observed (37.1%), followed by isolated cleft palate (31.7%) and isolated cleft lip (28.4%). A discrete relationship between cleft palate and the female gender was noticed (53%), and males were more affected by the other types of clefts (around 60%). The findings revealed a predominance of complete clefts of the primary and secondary palate, the treatment of which is more complex, and whose frequency is greater in males.

Tendência familial das fissuras lábio-palatais

Este estudo visou investigar a porcentagem de pacientes com fissuras que relatam a existencia de casos anteriores de individuos com fissuras ou outras anomalias congenitas na familia. Foram entrevistados 803 pacientes com fissura de labio e/ou palato, com ou sem mas formacoes adicionais e sem sindromes reconheciveis; as informacoes foram analisadas em porcentagens e medias. Uma porcentagem significante da amostra (32,3%) apresentou um ou mais casos de individuos com anomalias na familia, com uma influencia notavel da presenca de irmaos com fissuras e parentes com tipos mais severos de fissuras. Os resultados sugerem a presenca da heranca entre os provaveis fatores etiologicos. Todos os profissionais da saude devem estar cientes deste fato para possibilitar o fornecimento de informacao e aconselhamento.

Influência da expansão rápida da maxila na rizólise dos caninos decíduos usados como ancoragem

AIM: The current radiographic, retrospective longitudinal study aim was to demonstrate whether the Haas fixed appliance, modified for the primary and mixed dentitions, interferes in the velocity of the root resorption and exfoliation of the primary canines. METHODS: It was evaluated the amount of root resorption of primary canines on the basis of measurements of the apex-crown length of right and left upper primary canines. For this measurement twenty-four children submitted to rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in the primary and mixed dentition were compared to 15 children who did not undergo such a procedure. The measurement of the apex-crown length of the primary canines was achieved with the CEF-X program that allowed the calibration and standardization of the image size. RESULTS: Statistical data revealed that no difference was found in the velocity of root resorption of the primary canines between the control and experimental groups. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study allow us to conclude that root resorption of primary canines has no relationship with RME.
