Future trends in CAD – from the perspective of automotive industry

ABSTRACTComputer-aided design (CAD) plays a central role in automotive development. 3D-CAD models not only provide geometry information, but also serve as a basis for configuration of modules and systems, as well as for different simulation and verification processes. Product assemblies within CAD-platforms include structure-related information, are used for digital mock-up (DMU) investigations and provide lots of data for production and manufacturing engineering. Since first CAD systems have been applied in automotive industry in the 1980s, design software has been developed steadily, so that today’s CAD programs are able to provide far-reaching possibilities for integrated product development.The present paper includes an introduction and evaluation of existing and upcoming technologies for their use in future CAD programs and discusses different scenarios of implementation into automotive development. Integrated Approach Supporting Virtual Conception of Passenger Ergonomics in Automated Driving Cars

The paper introduces a comprehensive digital mock-up-based development method for ergonomics conception of automotive passenger compartments. The integrated approach enables consideration of different influencing parameters even during early layout and design phases, e.g. vehicle packaging, seating position, ergonomics evaluation, view- and safety-relevant aspects. A vehicle reference model is combined with human manikins and supports the generation of movement-induced envelop geometry to analyze ergonomics-related issues, as they occur in complex interior development of future car concepts.

Flexible parameterization strategies in automotive 3D vehicle layout

ABSTRACTToday, automotive design has to face numerous exciting challenges. The growing globalization causes an intensified competition amongst car manufacturers and forces them to reduce the required development time in order to shorten time to market, to appear first with attractive new products. Efficient and flexible processes and tools are necessary to handle the arising complexity efficiently. Parametric-associative 3D-CAD systems offer ideal conditions to face this challenge in virtual development. The present paper focusses on a special issue in automotive concept phase – the vehicle architecture layout process and required parameterization strategies.In most cases, parametric-associative relations defined within 3D-CAD models are of rigid kind. This implies that a formula, which is defined within a 3D-CAD model in order to evaluate a specific parameter, cannot change the input/output situation of involved parameters.
