No one yet knows how profoundly the assassination of President Kennedy altered the future course of history, but it certainly was an extremely significant event internationally as well as domestically. Its immediate effects on the American people are also of considerable importance, reflecting as they do the attitudes of the people toward their President and the emotional reactions to such an assassination. They are also important as a demonstration of the speed that characterizes modern communication. Paul B. Sheatsley is Director of the Survey Research Service, a division of the National Opinion Research Center, University of Chicago, and Secretary for the American Association for Public Opinion Research. Jacob J. Feldman is Director of Research at the National Opinion Research Center.
