The four papers that follow are devoted to a critical analysis of the volume, The Prediction of Personal Adjustment, by Paul Horst, Paul Wallin, Louis Guttman, et al. This study was instituted by the Social Science Research Council to deal with the important problems of predicting human behavior. Since this problem is-one of major interest, the editors have deemed it advisable to invite a number of scholars to analyze this volume.

A brief outline of the development of latent variables from manifest variables is sketched. The origin of Psychometrika and the Psychometric Society is presented. Some of the social philosophy motivating these developments are indicated. A few of the methodological considerations involved in these developments are outlined. The role of computers and computer programs is discussed. Important unresolved issues still undergoing resolution are indicated.
