Abstract The various devices which have been used to measure human strength during the past 250 years are illustrated and their principle of operation described. An effort was made to select instruments which were unique when first employed or which were radical modifications of original devices. Only the early investigators are mentioned in connection with any single instrument.

Abstract The study points out the fact that human strength has intrigued research workers in a variety of disciplines. Selected studies dealing with strength testing and the relationship of strength to other variables are cited. Gaps in our present knowledge concerning strength are discussed.

Abstract The current state of physical fitness of United States public school children, grades 5 through 12, was the subject of an important study conducted by Paul A. Hunsicker and Guy G. Reiff and supported by the Cooperative Research Program of the U.S. Office of Education. Using the AAHPER Youth Fitness Test as the basis of comparison, the study investigated the changes in physical fitness levels. New national norms were established from the data collected during the 1964-65 school year. Physical education teaches basic life principles as well as motor skills that have long-lasting benefits. Yet, say these authors, it is usually the first curricular area to suffer school budget cuts. Criteria for a good physical education program are described, with the implication that if the subject is properly taught it is more difficult to indiscriminate ly cut.
