Creating and using a model to monitor managerial talent

Paul J. Gordon; Paul H. Meredith

Paul J. Gordon is a professor of management at the Indiana University Graduate School of Business. He has served as president of the Academy of Management and vice president of the Indiana Society for Public Administration. In 1980, he was elected a Fellow of the International Academy of Management. Paul H. Meredith is an assistant professor of management at the Georgia Southern College School of Business. Previous experience includes policy and operating responsibility for quantitative and computer programs in banking, finance, and public accounting. This article was completed with the assistance of Mitchell S. Novit, Indiana University, Mary D.R. Meredith, Georgia Southern College, and a special project grant from the Indiana Office of Occupational Development. An extended version is scheduled to appear in Human Resource Planning in March 1982. Coming up with some findings about the flow of managerial talent through state agencies is only half the story; the real difficulties were in defining the problem, setting up the model, and finding the data.
