The contents of the book reflects the presentations delivered at the First Congress on the Safety and Efficacy of Topical Drugs and Cosmetics held in Philadelphia in October 1981. The information for so small a book is substantial, thought-provoking, and the mortar holding together a great many facts not conveniently assembled elsewhere. Some 18 years ago, the way was pointed out by the founders of the Dermatology Foundation. However, there must be a continual review of our objectives as society and medicine change. One path leads to medical school departments of dermatology. Such sections or departments vary greatly in personnel, financial resources, and activities, and, consequently, have varied needs. Continued financial support of these departments is imperative to help supply the arena and the appropriate environment for research and academic pursuits. New dermatologists are needed to replace those leaving the academic areas of our specialty. These ranks must be replenished through fellowships that supply support for new full-time investigators and teachers. Dermatologic departments must be supported and reinforced because their personnel (voluntary and salaried) supply most of our lecturers and write most of our scientific articles. Basic research must be nurtured to ensure an exciting and full harvest of candidates. The expertise
