Deductive object oriented frameworks integrate logic rules and inheritance There speci c problems arise Due to the combination of deduction and inheritance a deduction can take place depending on inherited facts thus raising indirect con icts and b also the class hierarchy and membership is subject to deduction From this point of view we investigate the applica tion of the extension semantics of Default Logic to deductive object oriented database languages By restricting the problem to Horn programs and a special type of defaults tailored to the semantics of inheritance a forward chaining construction of extensions is possible This construction is compared with a solution as implemented in the F Logic system Florid which is based on a combination of classical deductive xpoints and an inheritance trigger mechanism The paper is a condensed version of MK

Abstract Today, digital recording of live lectures is a common practice at many universities. This article provides an historical overview of this idea, from the first approaches starting 40 years ago to present-day systems and questions still subject of research.

The advantages of [[Florid]] as a deductive object-oriented database system are the rich object-oriented modeling facilities of its language F-logic. The focus of this paper is on [[Florids]] multiple inheritance mechanism which turns out to be a useful means to adapt various examples of nonmonotonic reasoning in the object-oriented setting.

Virtual University is a buzzword. However, in spite of manifold activities e-learning, that is the usage of multimedia and network technology to benefit or profit the students, will not inevitably be adopted in the university. On the contrary, these technologies have to be strongly pushed and the characteristics and specific culture of traditional universities have to be taken into account. Various methods and techniques have proven to be best practice, which can succeed in a traditional university and open up a way for the alma mater to find its place in cyberspace, too.

Summary Since 20 years universities are establishing new departments for e-learning services. Nowadays the question is not “if“ anymore, but “how” to shape e-learning departments. We propose to change the focus from organizational structure to a more process oriented approach similar to the process management view on companies.

E-learning will not inevitably cause a revolution of the traditional university. On the contrary, it is not yet clear whether multimedia and network technology will find its place in the university to benefit or profit the students. We discuss various methods and techniques (including Learning Management Systems, synchronous tele-teaching and Web-based seminars) and propose best practices, which can succeed under the specific conditions of a traditional university.

Bottom-up evaluation of DOOD programs is improved by adding functional reduction as call--by--need computation for scalar methods. To that aim methods, conceived as a functional language, have to satisfy certain properties, like uniqueness and directed use from call to result. In this paper we propose declarative and operational semantics of such methods, formalize the required properties, and show the integration of reduction and bottom-up evaluation. In an experiment this approach shows a better performance than a top-down technique and magic set optimization.
