This paper presents a component-level friction and wear tester which simulates many of the disk drive conditions that affect head/media tribology. Tester features include a high bandwidth friction transducer, yaw angle, seeking, sealed head/disk chamber, low spindle runout, start/stop profile matching, and environmental control. The tester is capable of measuring static friction, kinetic friction, and touchdown velocity. By realistically simulating a drive environment for tribology testing, the tester gives disk drive designers quick, accurate feedback on the reliability of their designs.
