Abstract The splicing of mRNA precursors proceeds through an unusual RNA structure: a lariat or tailed circular molecule where the 5′ end of the intervening sequence is attached to an internal residue via a 2′–5′ phosphodiester bond. The role of lariat formation and its possible significance are discussed.
