The quality of care practice is difficult to judge. Indeed, support and care provision is very personal, i.e., assessments are individual and lead to specific care packages, involving social services, health workers, care agencies. We expect privacy in our own affairs and confidentially from those to whom we disclose them. Therefore, we are in an urgent need for new, technological and formal approaches to problem solving, as the increase of population with special care requirements. Following this line of thought, it is one’s goal to present the VirtualECare framework, an intelligent multi-agent system able to monitor, interact and serve its customers, which are in need of care services, based in open standards, expecting not only to fulfil the objectives referred to above, but also to overcome the problems induced by the use of new technologies and formalisms.

Establishing the Foundation of Collaborative Networks

The need for computer-assisted collaboration, which originally manifested decades ago in manufacturing to establish small business-oriented networks of organizations in forms of supply chains or extended enterprises, is by now extended into a large number of other areas. While today production and service provision constitute the main areas of application for Collaborative Networks (CNs) worldwide, during the last decade virtual scientific laboratories, inter-enterprise collaborative engineering, crisis management, virtual institutes and virtual learning communities among others, are also rising within the wide spectrum of application areas in need of CNs. These developments emphasize the urgency for establishing a sounder foundation for collaborative networks, namely in terms of theoretical principles and formal models, capturing the concepts, entities, behaviors, and operations of the CNs, and developing technology-independent infrastructure architecture, tools and methodologies..

Multimodal behavioral analysis for non-invasive stress detection

This study presents and approach to measure the levels of acute stress in humans by analysing their behavioral patterns when interacting with technological devices. We study the effects of stress on eight behavioral, physical and cognitive features. The data was collected with the participation of 19 users in different phases, with different levels of stress induced. A non-parametric statistical hypothesis test is used to determine which features show statistically significant differences, for each user, when under stress. It is shown that the features more related to stress are the acceleration and the mean and maximum intensity of the touch. It is also shown that each user is affected by stress in a specific way. Moreover, all the process of estimating stress is undertaken in a non-invasive way. This work constitutes the foundation of a context layer for a virtual environment for conflict resolution. The main objective is to overcome some of the main drawbacks of communicating online, namely the lack of contextual information such as body language or gestures.

Using Case-Based Reasoning and Principled Negotiation to provide decision support for dispute resolution

The growing use of Information Technology in the commercial arena leads to an urgent need to find alternatives to traditional dispute resolution. New tools from fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) should be considered in the process of developing novel online dispute resolution (ODR) platforms, in order to make the ligation process simpler, faster and conform with the new virtual environments. In this work, we describe UMCourt, a project built around two sub-fields of AI research: Multi-agent Systems and Case-Based Reasoning, aimed at fostering the development of tools for ODR. This is then used to accomplish several objectives, from suggesting solutions to new disputes based on the observation of past similar disputes, to the improvement of the negotiation and mediation processes that may follow. The main objective of this work is to develop autonomous tools that can increase the effectiveness of the dispute resolution processes, namely by increasing the amount of meaningful information that is available for the parties.

A multi-modal approach for activity classification and fall detection

The society is changing towards a new paradigm in which an increasing number of old adults live alone. In parallel, the incidence of conditions that affect mobility and independence is also rising as a consequence of a longer life expectancy. In this paper, the specific problem of falls of old adults is addressed by devising a technological solution for monitoring these users. Video cameras, accelerometers and GPS sensors are combined in a multi-modal approach to monitor humans inside and outside the domestic environment. Machine learning techniques are used to detect falls and classify activities from accelerometer data. Video feeds and GPS are used to provide location inside and outside the domestic environment. It results in a monitoring solution that does not imply the confinement of the users to a closed environment.

A survey of software engineering best practices for the development of smart applications in Ambient Intelligence

Over the past decade, the world of Ambient Intelligence and smart environments has brought us a wide variety of novel applications with potential for exhibiting sophisticated intelligent behavior. These applications are called smart because they can sense, anticipate and adapt themselves to the context, desires and intentions of their users. However, the unpredictability of human behavior, the unanticipated circumstances of execution and a growing heterogeneity of future operational environments impose significant development challenges if these innovative applications are to gain wide acceptance in our daily life. Therefore, applying well-established software engineering methodologies is a fundamental prerequisite for delivering high quality and robust smart software applications. This survey provides a illustrative presentation of software engineering best practices in the area of smart environments and Ambient Intelligence. The aim of this survey is not to explore and compare every possible related work in detail, but to offer insights into the latest developments in this domain and to further the research into the successful design, development and evaluation of Ambient Intelligence frameworks and applications. Artificial neural networks in diabetes control

Diabetes Mellitus is now a prevalent disease in both developed and underdeveloped countries, being a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Overweight/obesity and hypertension are potentially modifiable risk factors for diabetes mellitus, and persist during the course of the disease. Despite the evidence from large controlled trials establishing the benefit of intensive diabetes management in reducing microvasculars and macrovasculars complications, high proportions of patients remain poorly controlled. Poor and inadequate glycemic control among patients with Type 2 diabetes constitutes a major public health problem and a risk factor for the development of diabetes complications. In clinical practice, optimal glycemic control is difficult to obtain on a long-term basis, once the reasons for feebly glycemic control are complex. Therefore, this work will focus on the development of a diagnosis support system, in terms of its knowledge representation and reasoning procedures, under a formal framework based on Logic Programming, complemented with an approach to computing centred on Artificial Neural Networks, to evaluate the Diabetes states and the Degree-of-Confidence that one has on such a happening.

Monitoring Mental Fatigue through the Analysis of Keyboard and Mouse Interaction Patterns

In our living, we often have a sense of being tired due to a mental or physical work, plus a feeling of performance degradation even in the accomplishment of simple tasks. However, these mental states are often not consciously felt or are ignored, an attitude that may result in human failures, errors and even in the occurrence of health problems or on a decrease in the quality of life. States of fatigue may be detected with a close monitoring of some indicators, such as productivity, performance or even the health states. In this work it is proposed a model and a prototype to detect and monitor fatigue based on some of these items. We focus specifically on mental fatigue, a key factor in an individual’s performance. With this approach we aim to develop leisure and work context-aware environments that may improve the quality of life and the individual performance of any human being.

Contracting agents: legal personality and representation

The combined use of computers and telecommunications and the latest evolution in the field of Artificial Intelligence brought along new ways of contracting and of expressing will and declarations. The question is, how far we can go in considering computer intelligence and autonomy, how can we legally deal with a new form of electronic behaviour capable of autonomous action? In the field of contracting, through Intelligent Electronic Agents, there is an imperious need of analysing the question of expression of consent, and two main possibilities have been proposed: considering electronic devices as mere machines or tools, or considering electronic devices as legal persons. Another possibility that has been frequently mentioned consists in the application of the rules of agency to electronic transactions. Meanwhile, the question remains: would it possible, under a Civil Law framework, to apply the notions of “legal personhood” and “representation” to electronic agents? It is obvious that existing legal norms are not fit for such an endeavouring challenge. Yet, the virtual world exists and it requires a new but realistic legal approach on software agents, in order to enhance the use of electronic commerce in a global world.

A Caregiver Support Platform within the Scope of an Ambient Assisted Living Ecosystem

The Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) area is in constant evolution, providing new technologies to users and enhancing the level of security and comfort that is ensured by house platforms. The Ambient Assisted Living for All (AAL4ALL) project aims to develop a new AAL concept, supported on a unified ecosystem and certification process that enables a heterogeneous environment. The concepts of Intelligent Environments, Ambient Intelligence, and the foundations of the Ambient Assisted Living are all presented in the framework of this project. In this work, we consider a specific platform developed in the scope of AAL4ALL, called UserAccess. The architecture of the platform and its role within the overall AAL4ALL concept, the implementation of the platform, and the available interfaces are presented. In addition, its feasibility is validated through a series of tests.
