Multimodal navigation display

In this paper we discuss the opportunities of multimodal interaction for multimodal flight planning in a navigation display and introduce key design principles of multimodal interaction (MMI) via keyboard, cursor-control device, touch gestures and voice. We present results of human factors evaluation of multimodal flight planning conducted on an interactive prototype and outline the possibilities of multimodal interaction for other functions in the flightdeck.

ERASMUS: Transaction Time And Situation Awareness On The Airborne Side

This paper presents results of the airborne impact assessment with focus on time requirements and situation awareness. The assessment was conducted under the ERASMUS project which is being investigated for its potential to accommodate increased levels of aircraft operations within the EU airspace without negative impacts on controller workload or safety. In order to generate conflict-free airspace, ERASMUS proposes minor speed modifications (RTA, Required Time of Arrival, clearances) up-linked via datalink service to selected aircraft. This process is time constrained which raises a question if the aircrews will process the ERASMUS clearances within the available time. The assessment analyzed all components of the airborne transaction sequence required for ERASMUS clearances. The results of the assessment indicate that even though processing the ERASMUS clearance is time consuming, pilots are able to answer it within the needed limits. This paper also discusses the impact of ERASMUS on a pilot’s awareness of the conflicting trac.
