Water management software for controlling the water supply function of many reservoirs in a watershed

Pavel Menšík; Miloš Starý; Daniel Marton

Changes in the hydrologic cycle in different parts of the world can cause new water management problems that we did not have to solve before. In some areas of the world such changes may lead to the more frequent occurrence of extreme floods, while other parts of the world may be afflicted by the increased incidence of periods of drought. One of the ways of preventing or completely avoiding the appearance of these problems is the re-evaluation of the size of the storage and protective capacity of existing reservoirs. In this paper a program is described which can be used in practice to design the storage capacities of newly proposed reservoirs or in the reassessment of the storage capacities of existing reservoirs. The program is written for general use; i.e., users can simply utilise code numbers in the program’s interactive graphical user interface to enter any configuration they require for the system being dealt with. The user interface allows the modification of relevant parts of the source code (the criterial function, the rules controlling a system of reservoirs). As a demonstration of functionality the program is applied to a selected water supply subsystem.

The influence of uncertainties in the calculation of mean monthly discharges on reservoir storage

Daniel Marton; Miloš Starý; Pavel Menšík

The Influence of Uncertainties in the Calculation of Mean Monthly Discharges On Reservoir Storage In normal practice, during the estimation of reservoir storage uncertainties affecting the values of mean monthly discharge series are not normally considered, and usually no estimates of these are known. Therefore, the question arises as to whether the results of the estimation of the capacity of storage reservoirs may be affected by uncertainties in the discharge series. The aim of this article is the suggestion of a possible approach to estimating the level of uncertainties affecting the elements of mean monthly discharge series. These discharge series are subsequently integrated into water reservoir storage capacity calculations, and the significance of the proposed approach is explored. Vliv Nejistot Členů Reálných Průtokových Řad na Hodnotu Zásobního Objemu Údolní Nádrže Nejistoty členů řad průměrných měsíčních průtoků nejsou v běžné praxi udávány, není ani znám odhad jejích velikostí. Otázkou rovněž je, zda nejistotami zatížené průtokové řady mohou ovlivnit výsledky vodohospodářského řešení zásobní funkce vodní nádrže. Cílem článku je naznačení možného postupu odhadu míry nejistot zatěžujících členy průtokové řady průměrných měsíčních průtoků a následné začlenění uvedené řady do výpočtů zásobního objemu vodní nádrže a posouzení významu uvedeného postupu.

Analysis of the influence of input data uncertainties on determining the reliability of reservoir storage capacity

Daniel Marton; Miloš Starý; Pavel Menšík

Abstract The paper contains a sensitivity analysis of the influence of uncertainties in input hydrological, morphological and operating data required for a proposal for active reservoir conservation storage capacity and its achieved values. By introducing uncertainties into the considered inputs of the water management analysis of a reservoir, the subsequent analysed reservoir storage capacity is also affected with uncertainties. The values of water outflows from the reservoir and the hydrological reliabilities are affected with uncertainties as well. A simulation model of reservoir behaviour has been compiled with this kind of calculation as stated below. The model allows evaluation of the solution results, taking uncertainties into consideration, in contributing to a reduction in the occurrence of failure or lack of water during reservoir operation in low-water and dry periods.

Optimisation of Water Management Systems Using a GPU-Accelerated Differential Evolution

Jiri Jaros; Jan Marek; Pavel Menšík

The aim of this paper is to present a tool that could optimise water levels in dams to provide the inhabitants and industry with enough fresh water while keeping a reasonable flood protection and river navigability. Since the water systems may be quite complicated and the outflow plans have to be precise, we developed a GPU-accelerated algorithm based on the differential evolution to solve this task. The experimental results show that a high quality annual outflow plans can be obtained within a minute, almost 18 times faster than on a hex-core CPU.
