The volatiles of five Micromeria species endemic to the Canary Islands

Abstract The chemical composition of the volatiles from five Micromeria species (section Micromeria ) gathered in the Canary Islands is reported. These species were found to contain bornane and pinane types of bicyclic monoterpenes as the most important components of their essential oils. The analysis showed that the Micromeria species studied could be grouped according to the monoterpene skeleton type. M. lachnophylla and M. lasiophylla subsp. palmensis were characterized by larger amounts of bornane type monoterpenes than pinane type monoterpenes. M. lasiophylla subsp. palmensis in addition to those compounds, contained linalool as the other main constituent. The volatile oils of M. varia and M. hyssopffolia were found to contain similar quantities of bornane and pinane type components. M. varia also accumulated large amounts of (E)-nerolidol. Two samples of M. herpyllomorfa were characterized by larger amounts of pinane type monoterpenes than bornane type monoterpenes.

Caloplaca chelyae (Teloschistaceae), a new lichen from the Canary Islands

Israel Pérez-Vargas; Pedro Luis Pérez de Paz

Abstract Caloplaca chelyae is described as new to science. It is characterized by its scant crustose thallus, spores (12–)13–15 × (7–)8–11 µm, with a narrow equatorial wall-thickening, (1.5–)2–3 µm less than ¼ the length of the spore. This new species, related to subgenus Gyalolechia, was found on bryophytes in the high mountains of the Canary Islands, in El Teide National Park (Tenerife) and La Caldera de Taburiente National Park (La Palma). Possible associated taxa are briefly discussed.

Here we reconstruct the evolutionary history of Micromeria in the Canary Islands using eight nuclear markers. Our results show two centers of diversification for Micromeria, one in the eastern islands Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, the other in the western islands, Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro. Suggested directions of inter-island colonization are the following: Gran Canaria to Lanzarote and La Gomera; Tenerife to La Palma (from the paleoisland of Teno), to El Hierro (from the younger, central part), and to La Gomera and Madeira (from the paleoislands). Colonization of La Gomera probably occurred several times from Gran Canaria and Tenerife. The taxonomic implications of these results are discussed. Incongruence among the different markers was evaluated and, using next generation sequencing, we investigated if this incongruence is due to gene duplication.

Antonio G. González; J. Bermejo Barrera; Jesús G. Díaz; T.Zaragoza Garcia; Pedro Luis Pérez de Paz

Four Argyranthemum species endemic to the Canary Islands were studied, yielding eight acetylene derivatives: frutescin, demethylfrutescin, frutescinol acetate, capillol acetate, capillol, capillon, demethoxyfrutescinol acetate, foeniculacin (not previously described), the thiophene derivative 6-(2-thienyl)-2,4-hexadienoic acid N-isobutylamide and three sesquiterpene lactones: 8-deoxycumambrin, novanin and α-tetrahydrosantonin. Capillol, demethoxyfrutescinol acetate and α-tetrahydrosantonin are new natural products. The distribution of these substances in the roots, stems, leaves and flowers of the four taxa is given.

Distribution of secondary metabolites in two subspecies of Todaroa aurea

Antonio G. González; J. Bermejo Barrera; Jesús G. Díaz; L. Arancibia López; Pedro Luis Pérez de Paz

Abstract When Todaroa aurea, endemic to the Canary Islands, was studied, the substances found in the plant from Tenerife proved to be different from those in the plant gathered in La Palma and it seems likely that two subspecies are involved: T. aurea subspq aurea (Tenerife) and T. aurea subsp, suaveolens (La Palma).

Israel Pérez-Vargas; Consuelo Hernández-Padrón; Pedro Luis Pérez de Paz; John A. Elix

Diploschistes albopruinosus is described as new to science. This species is found on siliceous rocks in La Caldera de Taburiente National Park (La Palma, Canary Islands). A description of the species is given together with notes on its chemistry, distribution, ecology and taxonomy. Related lichen taxa are discussed.

Israel Pérez-Vargas; Consuelo E. Hernández Padrón; Pedro Luis Pérez de Paz; John Elix

Abstract Xanthoparmelia teydea is described as new to science. This new species was found on basaltic rocks in the high mountains of the Canary Islands, in El Teide National Park (Tenerife Island). A description of the species is given together with notes on its chemistry, distribution, ecology and taxonomy. Possible associated taxa are briefly discussed.

Abstract A steam distilled oil obtained from the fruits of Astydamia latifolia grown in Tenerife, Canary Islands, was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Twenty-six components were characterized representing 98.6% of the oil. The oil contained β-phellandrene (15.0%), γ-terpinene (6.0%), myristicin (39.6%) and dillapiole (16.9%) as major constituents.
