Abstract Recently, we have shown that [60] fullerene (C 60 ) may be produced by pyrolysis of the bowl-shaped corannulene molecule under a wide range of conditions. Both naphthalene and its dimer benzo [ k ] fluoranthene may be employed as precursors to C 60 .

Formation of [60]fullerene by pyrolysis of corannulene, 7,10-bis(2,2'-dibromovinyl)fluoranthene, and 11,12-benzofluoranthene

Colin Crowley; Harold W. Kroto; Roger Taylor; David R. M. Walton; Matthew S. Bratcher; Pei-Chao Cheng; Lawrence T. Scott

Abstract [60]Fullerene is produced by pyrolysis of corannulene between 650 and 1200 °C, (either with or without the presence of Pd/C or Co catalysts), 7, 10- bis(2,2′ -dibromovinyl)fluoranthene (a corannulene precursor) at 700 °C, and of 11, 12-benzofluoranthene at 900–1000 °C.

Reduction of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9-penta-t-butyl-corannulene: Isomeric sandwiches with multiple lithium cations inside and out

Amir Weitz; Mordecai Rabinovitz; Pei-Chao Cheng; Lawrence T. Scott

Abstract Four reduction stages were observed for 1, 3, 5, 7, 9-penta-t-Bu-corannulene(2), two of which exhibited diamagnetic character: a paratropic dianion 2 2− and a diatropic tetraanion 2 4− . In the last stage of reduction three distinct tetraionic species are detected. Two of them are sandwhich-type compounds with eight Li cations each and a tetraionic monomer.

Effect that Various Electron Donating Functional Groups have Regarding Nitromethane's Inability to Quench Fluorescence Emission of Nonalternant Fluoranthenoid Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract Nitromethane selectively quenches fluorescence emission of alternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) via an electron transfer mechanism. Emission intensities of nonalternant PAHs, for the most part, are unaffected. To better understand the quenching mechanism, the fluorescence behavoir of 1-methylfluoranthene, 2-methylfluoranthene, 3-methylfluoranthene, 7-methylfluoranthene, 8-methylfluoranthene, t-butyldibenzo[ghi, mno]fluoranthene, 10-methylbenzo[b]fluoranthene, 12-methoxybenzo[b]fluoranthene, 10-methoxybenzo[b]fluoranthene, 10-hydroxybenzo[b]fluoranthene, 10-hydroxybenzo[j]fluoranthene, 10-methoxybenzo[j]fluoranthene, 3-metnoxybenzo[k]fluoranthene, 3-hydroxy-benzo[k]fluoranthene, 9-methoxybenzo[k]fluoranthene and 9-hydroxybenzo[k]fluoranthene dissolved in neat acetonitrile, toluene-acetonitrile and ethyl acetate-acetonitrile solvents was measured at different nitromethane concentrations. Experimental results show that electron donating methyl-, t-butyl, methoxy- and hydroxy-groups do n...
