Wave transmission, phonon localization, and heat conduction of a one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova chain

Peiqing Tong; Baowen Li; Bambi Hu

We study the transmission coefficient of a plane wave through a one-dimensional finite quasiperiodic system—the Frenkel-Kontorova ~FK! model—embedding in an infinite uniform harmonic chain. By varying the mass of atoms in the infinite uniform chain, we obtain the transmission coefficients forall eigenfrequencies. The phonon localization of the incommensurated FK chain is also studied in terms of the transmission coefficients and the Thouless exponents. Moreover, the heat conduction of the Rubin-Greer-like model for the FK chain at low temperature is calculated. It is found that the stationary heat flux J(N);N a , and a depends on the strength of the external potential. @S0163-1829~99!12713-9#

Anomalous Finite-Size Effect in Superconducting Josephson Junction Arrays

Qing-Hu Chen; Lei-Han Tang; Peiqing Tong

We show that a previously reported discrepancy between simulations of superconducting Josephson junction arrays and the theoretical analysis of Ambegaokar, Halperin, Nelson, and Siggia (AHNS) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 40, 783 (1978)] is rooted in a peculiar finite-size effect under periodic boundary conditions. Our simulation results for the largest array support the power-law I-V curves predicted by AHNS. Analysis of the vortex dynamics reveals two intrinsic length scales set by the applied current, which define three size regimes with distinctive I-V characteristics.

von Neumann entropy and localization-delocalization transition of electron states in quantum small-world networks.

Longyan Gong; Peiqing Tong

The von Neumann entropy for an electron in periodic, disorder, and quasiperiodic quantum small-world networks (QSWNs) is studied numerically. For the disorder QSWNs, the derivative of the spectrum-averaged von Neumann entropy is maximal at a certain density of shortcut links p*, which can be as a signature of the localization-delocalization transition of electron states. The transition point p* is agreement with that obtained by the level statistics method. For the quasiperiodic QSWNs, it is found that there are two regions of the potential parameter. The behaviors of electron states in different regions are similar to that of periodic and disorder QSWNs, respectively.

-wave pairing symmetry. We found two distinct scattering wave vectors whose evolution can be explained based on the evolution of the constant-energy contours. The QPI spectra presented in this paper can thus be compared with future scanning tunneling microscopy experiments to test whether the pairing symmetry is
