We present sum-frequency generation (SFG) characteristics of CsB(3)O(5) crystal (CBO). The effective nonlinear-optical coefficient of CBO in the ultraviolet range is close to its maximum. High-efficiency SFG with a picosecond Nd:YAG laser with output wavelengths of 355 and 266 nm was achieved. Experiments showed that CBO can be used under high power density without damage to the crystal.

Solid solutions of NdxLa2−xcaB10O19 with different Na3+ concentration have been synthesized by substituting Nd 3+ for La3+ in La2CaB10O19 Powder X-ray diffraction analysis shows that Nd3+ is easy to incorporate into the crystal. Single crystal ndxLa2−xCaB10O19 (NLCB) in centimeter size has been grown by Kyropoulos method. The crystal has strong absorption around 580nm and 805nm. The fluorescence spectra indicate that there is an energy transition at 1.06μm. And the SHG of NLCB is about the twice as that of KDP. These favorable features make NLCB a candidate for laser NLO multifunctional materials.

A new series of mixed borates of rare-earth elements and calcium with the composition R2CaB10O19 (where R represents rare-earth element) has been identified in the system R2O3-CaO-B2O3. These isostructural compounds exhibit a powder second harmonic generation (SHG) effect about twice larger than that of KDP (KH2PO4). The crystal structure of La2CaB10O19 (LCB), one member of the RCB family, has been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2, with a equals 11.043(3)angstrom, b equals 6.563(2)angstrom, c equals 9.129(2)angstrom, (alpha) equals (gamma) equals 90 degrees, (beta) equals 91.47 degrees, and two formula units per cell. LCB melts congruently with a melting point of 1065 plus or minus 2 degrees Celsius. Single crystals of LCB and Nd doped LCB in centimeter size have been grown from the stoichiometric melt. The preliminary results on properties of LCB are presented.

Abstract A novel compound with the chemical formula of La2SrB10O19 has been successfully synthesized from the La2O3 SrOB2O3 system via a solid state reaction. The powder X-ray diffraction data is reported. It is found that the data show little difference from that of La2CaB10O19 which demonstrate that they are isostructural. The powder second harmonic generation effect of La2SrB1)O19 is about twice that of KH2PO4(KDP). The investigation of crystal growth is in progress.

Jikang Yuan; Peizhen Fu; Junxin Wang; Fan Guo; Zhiping Yang; Yicheng Wu

Fresnoite type compound Sr 2 TiSi 2 O 8 was found as a new nonlinear optical material. This compound was synthesized by substituting Sr 2+ for Ba 2+ in fresnoite Ba 2 TiSi 2 O 8 . X- ray diffraction data showed Sr 2 TiSi 2 O 8 and fresnoite are isostructural. The second harmonic generation (SHG) effect of Sr 2 TiSi 2 O 8 is about 8 times larger than that of KH 2 PO 4 (KDP). The ultraviolet absorption edge of Sr 2 TiSi 2 O 8 is around 270nm.

Hydrothermal treatment of calcium oxide and boric acid mixtures at temperatures between 234 °C and 300 °C has produced a colorless, transparent, orthorhombic compound Ca2B6O11 · H2O. Of the seven known members of the series of hydrated dicalcium hexaborate containing boron-oxygen six-membered ring anionic group (B3O8)-7, only the title compound has been found to have the nonlinear optical effect. The second harmanic generation (SHG) effect of its crystal is larger than that of KH2PO4 (KDP). The reflection spectrum has shown that this compound has no absorption in the experimental wavelength range (800–240 nm). Its crystal structure is favorable for generating the nonlinear optical effect.

Summary form only given. Since powerful, tunable ultraviolet laser sources rely on the frequency-doubling of lasers in the visible range, the search for new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials for ultraviolet and blue-green spectroscopic applications has received increasing attention. In the past few years a new NLO crystal YCa/sub 4/O(BO/sub 3/)/sub 3/ (YCOB) has attracted considerable interest because it exhibits a relatively large second harmonic generation (SHG) effect, and the single crystal is easily grown. Recently a new lanthanum and calcium borate with the composition La/sub 2/CaB/sub 10/O/sub 19/ was identified by our group. This compound possesses the significant feature comparable with that of YCOB. In this paper, we report the linear optical and nonlinear optical properties of La/sub 2/CaB/sub 10/O/sub 19/ crystal (LCB).

Single crystals of La/sub 2/CaB/sub 10/O/sub 19/ (LCB) were grown by the pulling method. The second harmonic generation conversion efficiency of a picosecond Nd:YAG laser is 25% for a 3mm long LCB crystal and 6GW/cm/sup 2/ pump intensity.

A new series of niobium phosphates with the composition of MxNb4P21717 (MLi and Na, x=4; M=Zn, Ca, Mg, Sr and Ba, x=2) have been successfully synthesized. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data of these isostructural compounds, was studied The powder Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) effects of these compounds were about twice of that of KH2PO4 (KDP).
