Abstract The main focus of this study was to investigate the impact of the financial situation as well as the importance of internal financing for economically sound growth among forest machine entrepreneurs in Finland, with the aid of their financial statements for 2001–2006. Thirty-two limited companies that showed an increase in turnover during this period were investigated. The companies were classified into three groups based on their financial position in 2001: Profitable and Stable, Mediocre, and Weak. The financial situations of these three groups in 2001 were compared with 2006. The study showed that the relative position of these groups did not change significantly between 2001 and 2006. Those companies that were in a weak economic position in 2001 found themselves in an even more difficult situation in 2006. The results indicated that growth seems more likely to reinforce the economic situation of the company as it was before the growth took place. Therefore, when considering a growth strategy, the company must first concentrate on improving its economic position and business model.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to help growth‐oriented timber haulage entrepreneurs to recognise the problems of growth and understand its implications.Design/methodology/approach – Data from 30 companies were retrieved from their financial statements between 2001 and 2006. The relevant literature consists of the company growth theory, strategy analysis and definitions of entrepreneurship. In this empirical study a resource‐based approach was used as the theoretical background. The research method was purely financial analysis.Findings – Economies of scale exist in the sector but are limited and do not evolve hand‐in‐hand with company size. There is an optimum size for a timber haulage company at which it can operate efficiently. However, the sector may be polarised.Research limitations/implications – The data used in the study do not clarify the particular entrepreneurial actions taken in companies as they grew.Originality/value – This empirical study covers new ground and offers new information ...

The purpose of the study was to determine how timber transport businesses have succeeded after deregulation. A second goal was to determine whether it is possible to collect year‐end reports from businesses by using a mail inquiry and so measure reliably the so‐called strategic variables that are central to success. The possibility of using mailed questionnaires would eliminate costly personal interviews. Many changes have taken place in the trucking contracting business since deregulation in 1991. Partly in consequence of this, approximately one out of every five businesses have ceased to operate. The most common reason for termination was declining economic viability. The economic health of the businesses still in operation has deteriorated; but not conclusively. The rate of return from the mail inquiry was low, both as far as year‐end results and the questionnaire were concerned. Measurement of the most important strategic variables also proved difficult on the basis of the mail inquiry.
