Fast and Accurate TIS Testing Method for Wireless User Equipment With RSS Reporting

Penghui Shen; Yihong Qi; Wei Yu; Fuhai Li; Jun Fan

A fast and accurate total isotropic sensitivity (TIS) testing method for wireless user equipment based on radiated sensitivity measurement and received signal strength (RSS) reporting is proposed in this paper. Innovative techniques for avoiding the effects of RSS reporting errors on TIS accuracy and reducing the total TIS measurement time are presented and incorporated into the testing procedures. The proposed method is suitable for receiver sensitivity testing of single input, single output radio systems having RSS reporting such as cellular communication, WiFi, and Bluetooth systems.

Fast Method for OTA Performance Testing of Transmit–Receive Cofrequency Mobile Terminal

Penghui Shen; Yihong Qi; Wei Yu; Fuhai Li; Jun Fan

This paper provides a novel method for measuring of a wireless user equipment, when the equipment uses the same frequency for both transmitting and receiving. The proposed method is based on the fact that the total radiated power (TRP) and the total isotropic sensitivity patterns are complementary for transmit-receive cofrequency mobile terminals. Thus, the proposed method only requires a full TRP test and an accurate efficient isotropic sensitivity test to complete a total OTA performance measurement, resulting in improved test accuracy and decreased measurement time compared to the traditional test method defined in the OTA testing standard. The proposed method is suitable for OTA testing of transmit-receive cofrequency and single-input single-output radio systems, such as cellular communication, Wi-Fi, ZigBee, and Bluetooth.

Eliminating non-linear RSS reporting error in a radiated RSS-based TIS testing method

Penghui Shen; Yihong Qi; Wei Yu; Fuhai Li; Jun Fan

A fast total isotropic sensitivity (TIS) testing method based on radiated sensitivity measurement and received signal strength (RSS) reporting is studied in this paper. An innovative method for eliminating a non-linear system error in RSS reporting is presented and incorporated into the testing procedures. Compared to the methods specified in the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) test plan, the improved fast TIS testing method can considerably reduce measurement uncertainty while maintaining the fast testing speed. Thus, it is very suitable for receiver sensitivity testing of single input single output radio systems having RSS reporting, such as cellular communication, WiFi, and bluetooth systems.

Studying the effects of location offset on the evaluation of MIMO performance based on the radiated two-stage (RTS) method

Yansheng Wang; Songping Wu; Zhiping Yang; Penghui Shen; Jun Fan

The intermediate results in Stage I of the RTS method can be used to help evaluate the quality of the designed MIMO antennas, which can benefit engineers with the debugging process for MIMO systems. This is achieved by exploiting the obtained intermediate results to calculate some metrics including envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) and antenna gain imbalance (AGI). The detailed process is described in the paper. The performance evaluation is desired to be accurate. However, the user equipment (UE) location offset may exist during real measurements and this can affect the evaluation of the MIMO performance. Thus, it is of interest to study to what extent the MIMO performance evaluation is influenced by the UE location offset.

Eliminating RSARP Reporting Errors in the RTS Method for MIMO OTA Test

Penghui Shen; Yihong Qi; Wei Yu; Fuhai Li

A method for eliminating the received signal amplitude and relative phase (RSARP) reporting errors in the radiated two-stage (RTS) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) over the air (OTA) tests is proposed in this paper. The paper first introduced the concept of the RTS MIMO OTA test method, which is based on a first stage of multiple antennas pattern information measurement through RSARP reporting, followed by a second stage of throughput measurement using the signals generated by combining the measured antenna patterns with the selected spatial channel model. The RSARP reporting errors would be brought into the measured antenna patterns and then feed into the throughput test signals, which finally flow in the MIMO receivers and greatly affect the throughput test accuracy. The method proposed in this paper could solve this issue through eliminating the RSARP reporting errors and ensure the accuracy of the MIMO OTA performance test. Moreover, the method could simplify the RTS MIMO test procedure and reduce the measurement period.

Fast method for EIS sweep test

Penghui Shen; Zixin Liu; Yihong Qi; Wei Yu; Jun Fan

This paper proposed a novel fast band-sweep measurement method for efficient isotropic sensitivity (EIS) of wireless devices. The method is built on the facts that the relationship between the bit error rate (BER) and the received power is generally consistent in the same band, and the EIS values at a fixed angle is slowly-changing on the frequency except harmonics. Therefore, only few frequency points are required to be measured for a whole band sweep test resulting in a significantly decrease in measurement time.

Several major methods for OTA performance testing of mobile terminal

Penghui Shen; Yihong Qi; Wei Yu; Fuhai Li; Jun Fan

Several major methods for Over the Air (OTA) performance measurement of wireless devices are presented, detailed and compared in this paper, the power-stepping down method defined in the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) test plan [1], the RSS-based method and the RSS-curve based method proposed in [2-4], and the transmit-receive co-frequency based method. The derivations of the theoretical foundations for all methods were detailed and the results given by all methods were compared in this paper. Those methods are suitable for receiver sensitivity measurement of single input, single output radio systems such as cellular communication, WiFi, ZigBee and Bluetooth systems.
