A bovine collagen sponge containing gentamicin was applied locally in 10 patients with chronic osteomyelitis who were then followed for 1 year postoperatively. No adverse effects or recurrence of infections was observed. The release of gentamicin from the sponge was more complete and rapid than has been reported with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) beads. Compared with previous reports on PMMA beads, a much higher gentamicin concentration in the wound exudate can be expected after implantation of the collagen sponge, which is easy to apply and does not require a second operation for removal.

Jorgensen, P.S. (1989). On qualitative analysis and the question of validity. Nordisk Psykologi, 41, 25–41. Qualitative analysis is today a widely used method in social investigations. Often based upon interviews with relatively few persons the qualitative analysis shall reach conclusions, which hold beyond time and place. Therefore the question of validity is important. The present article proposes criteria of validity within a humanistic tradition. The grounding principle of validity is connected to the interview situation. Here one has to obtain a validity of experience. In the analytical proces the principles of validity are based on theoretical concepts and attached to three analytical steps: identification, correspondence and coherence. The goal of the qualitative analysis is to obtain the status of generalized knowledge, documented on the basis of probability.

A personal computer program to monitor wound infections and other complications after orthopedic operations was developed, adopting international criteria and definitions. The program offers fixed data entry screens, and a free text editor, and produces user-specified variations of seven screen pages comprising most of the epidemiological data needed for surveillance and complciation control. Furthermore a number of special lists can be generated for use in the daily work. For all reports and lists it is possible to generate subpopulations with up to twelve criteria. The program was tested in four danish orthopedic departments and serves well as a simple local tool for the operating staff, offering fast information on complication rates. Results consisting 2,583 operations are presented. The overall rates of complications were 1.8% superficial wound infections, 0.6% deep wound infections, 2.6% other infections and 3.8 other complications. The system is lowcost and an effective method of providing a widespread uniform surveillance of surgical wound infections and other complications in the orthopedic wards.

Jorgensen, P.S. (1988). The question of image in psychology. Nordisk Psykologi, 40, 241–244. On the occasion of Nordic Psychologys fortieth anniversary, the journal has invited 10 leading Nordic colleagues to consider the question of »Images of Man« in psychology. The perspective is the fundamental social changes that have taken place since 1949. Their responses emphasise the problem of psychologys relevance to society in the eighties—both ontologically, epistemiologically and with respect to research and the profession.

Jorgensen, P.S., Kyng, B., Maar, V., Rasmussen, L., & Hojlund, L.: Is prevention possible in the preschool years? A longitudinal study of a group of preschool children in a local community. Nordisk Psykologi, 1987, 39 (4), 255–267. The concept of prevention is considered with especial regard to the group of children with persistent difficulties. Studies of different kinds show that some 20–25 pct. of a coharte of children require preventive support during their development if psycho-social disorders are to be avoided. The outcome of prevention has been evaluated in several studies, and especially with respect to psycho-social programs, research seems in lack of substantial documentation. The present investigation followed a group of children from age 4 until their early school years. Both parents and children were offered participation in different group activities in the project and where needed the social community system offered special support. For eleven children the effect of this program was almost...
