Cyclometallated iridium carbene complexes are introduced as efficient blue triplet emitters. Quantum mechanical calculations have been used to design and to optimize this class of materials predominantely with respect to color coordinates and luminescence quantum yield. To complete the set of materials required for deep blue OLED devices we engineered suitable host and blocker materials for the use in combination with large triplet energy carbene emitters. These tailor-made materials were applied to develop deep blue electroluminescent devices with excellent efficiency.

The innovative momentum of crystal engineering

Peter Erk; Heidi Hengelsberg; Mairi F. Haddow; Richard van Gelder

Crystal engineering has become an established part in various segments of industrial research. The toolbox of crystal engineering not only offers design strategies for performance chemicals and characterization tools for active ingredients but also helps to provide fundamental concepts for understanding the principles behind the formation and properties of organic solids. In this highlight examples are given for the application of crystal engineering during different phases of development of various industrial products, e.g. pigments, dyes, agrochemicals and drugs. In addition, future needs and possible development trends in crystal engineering are discussed with a special emphasis on novel innovative materials.

Diiminoisoindoline: tautomerism, conformations, and polymorphism.

Zhi-Qin Zhang; Jeffrey M. Njus; Daniel J. Sandman; Chengyun Guo; Bruce M. Foxman; Peter Erk; Richard van Gelder

Two polymorphs of the industrially important compound diiminoisoindoline occur in the amino tautomeric form as a conformational isomorph with a 1 : 1 mixture of the syn- and anti-isomers, and a conformational polymorph containing only the syn-isomer.
