IN anticipation of the present meeting, our chairman kindly suggested to me a number of topics around which a discussion might well center. These topics were the following: I. General principles in college courses where reading ability is the main objective; II. The grading of reading material; III. Types of reading tests; and IV. Correlation between the various sections of the American Council Test. I. General Principles. The outstanding features of our First Year Sequence, i.e., of our first three quarters of German, are these:

THE lamentable confusion in regard to the most desirable aim of our courses is gradually clearing up. The conviction is growing that the reading aim is in most classes soundest and safest; soundest because of our geographic isolation from European countries; safest because of the relatively short time our students are able to devote to the language and the necessity of choosing a definitely attainable end.
