IGO documents and publications: Volume, distribution, recent developments, and sources of information∗

Abstract This article discusses the following aspects of documentation and publishing by international governmental organizations (IGOs): the volume of IGO documents and publications and recent efforts to curb production; characteristics of distribution of the document and publication output; some recent trends bearing on collection development, such as external publishing and copublishing, increasing use of microform, the emergence of new IGOs and of new forms of international organization; and the nature and types of sources of information about IGO material. Discussion is illustrated by references to the publishing/documentation pattern of organizations in the UN system as well as other IGOs, e.g., the OECD and the European Communities. The appendix comprises a select bibliography of sources of information about IGO documents and publications.

Abstract This article examines some problems of collection development for primary United Nations material and complementary secondary works: it outlines the purposes of collecting such material in various types of libraries; surveys general characteristics of collection development in relation to UN material and special problems of collecting that material; sketches the nature of various collection levels and suggests types of material and specific titles appropriate for each level; explores distribution patterns of UN documents and publications and the special problems of depository libraries; gives information about various methods of acquisition and suggests selection tools and sources.
