835 too, performance of poetry by non-poets is alive and well in films like Apocalypse Now (1979) and Dead Poets Society (1989); and the Poetry Out Loud national contest, now in its third year, testifies to a renewed interest in traditional poetry recitation. In the context of such a revival, this fascinating study helps us to understand how popular performance practices use “voice” in order to shape poetry’s role. In so doing it helps to take modern poetry off the page and into the world.
