Non-Conventional Network Analysis

Péter Kádár

The development, operational control and evaluation of the events in the power system necessitate different network calculation methods. For load distribution and contingency analysis is used a stationary grid model. The classic load-flow algorithm is an iterative solution for equation system of thousands variables. For the efficient computation of networks containing huge number of nodes and branches some acceleration and simplification algorithms are used too (decoupled and DC load-flow) The emerging structures as the large non meshed radial networks, microgrids, power quality islands opens new frontiers instead of the exhaustive number-crunching techniques. The task can be rephrased and the application of many intelligent computation method can be relevant, as the artificial neural networks and several optimization solutions. The presentation introduces the on- and off-line tasks of the network calculations, the existing methods and the novel techniques Through examples we are getting acquainted with the • Applications of Simulated Annealing, Tabu Search and Genetic Algorithms for Transmission Network Expansion Planning • Heuristic Ant Colony Search algorithm in Constrained Load Flow problem (reactive power balance) • Optimal power dispatch based on linear decomposition • Optimization for bottle neck flow • Cost and/or loss minimization • Algorithms for power flow control by Flexible AC Transmission devices • Trading path optimization Finally an outlook is given about the new trends of the calculation demands and solutions.

Solar belt supplies electricity for the World

Péter Kádár

The major part of the electricity production is generated on fossil base. The renewable generation emits far less CO2. In this paper we investigate a vision how all the electricity need could be supplied by solar PV plants Our technical vision is a solar belt surrounding the earth near the equator. If we calculate the power capacities a narrow stripe could produce all the electricity need for the whole World. At first sight we do not store the energy but try to produce it on the sunny side and transmit to the dark side ‘on-line’ the necessary amount. We plan for this long distance/high energy transmission UHVDC network. We made a bulk calculation about the availability of this approach and we find on-line PV supply of the World technologically feasible. If we don’t have a “green field investment” only with PV solution but we start from the existing situation and we build more PV and we create a large East-West transmission system, it can alleviate the present energy problems.

Small Hydro Plant Developments

Péter Kádár

The exploitation of the renewable sources is a challenge for all the engineers. Hydro power application is ranging from a kW to order of GW. The technical solutions have a wide spectra, such as turbines and dam constructions. The hydro power potential of Hungary is modest. Óbuda University cooperates with the patent owner in the development of new devices. In this paper we introduce the latest development for the mini hydro applications capable of deploying low heading watercourses and small size rivers. The fast mountable flowing through arrangement and the anchored floating Sagebien wheel devices have 5-10 kW output power. These days the operations are in the test phase.
