The Merrifield Collection

The Merrifield Collection of official labour movement records, books, pamphlets, ephemera and original manuscripts is now available for reference. It is probably one of the finest private collections of material concerning the labour movement in Australia, and the completion of its transfer from Dr Merrifields home to the La Trobe Library, the Australiana wing of the State Library of Victoria,* is an important occasion for labour historians. Assembled during the many years of his active political life, the collection reflects Dr Merrifields resolute deter mination to preserve the records of the movement that he served, and his wide range of contacts with politicians and other labour activists who entrusted material to his care.
