Greek-Speaking Moslems of North-East Turkey: Prolegomena to a Study of the Ophitic Sub-Dialect of Pontic

Peter Mackridge

Abstract It has become common in recent years for Greek Pontians, settled in Greece since 1922/3, and their families to go on coach-tours to visit their family homes in Pontus. They tend to return to Greece with stories of finding local people there with whom they have been able to converse in the Pontic dialect of Greek. Surprisingly, these travellers appear to take this for granted, and, as far as I am aware, no one has made a study of the Greek spoken in Pontus today, other than to include a few random phrases in travelogues. The purpose of this article is to make some preliminary observations on the Pontic Greek spoken by Moslems, particularly those of the Ophis (Of) region.

Venise après Venise: official languages in the Ionian Islands, 1797–18641

Peter Mackridge

Even though the Ionian Islands (Heptanese) were removed from Venetian control in 1797, it was not until 1852 that Italian ceased to be used as an official language there. My article examines the official use of the three relevant languages (Italian, Greek and English), as laid down by statute and carried out in practice, and traces the stages leading to the final replacement of Italian with Greek for all official purposes. My study is based on the minutes of Ionian parliamentary debates and on despatches between the High Commissioner and the Colonial Office as well as constitutional documents and published Acts of Parliament.

A Turco-Greek inscription at Ürgüp in Cappadocia

Peter Mackridge

Abstract Urgup is today an important tourist centre, since most visitors to the Byzantine churches and monasteries of Cappadocia use the town as a base for their excursions. Before the First World War the majority of its population were Orthodox Christians, many of whom enjoyed a high degree of prosperity. A large proportion of these were Turcophones, and the number of them who read karamanlidika (Turkish written in Greek characters) was substantial, to judge by the list of 232 citizens of the town who subscribed to a book printed in karamanlidika at Athens in 1876.There are a number of gravestones with inscriptions in karamanlidika at the municipal museum of Urgup.

The Modern Greek Language: A Descriptive Analysis of Standard Modern Greek

Brian D. Joseph; Peter Mackridge

This is the first comprehensive survey of Standard Modern Greek, as it has emerged from the two coexistent varieties of the language - katharevousa and demotic. The book offers a descriptive analysis of the structure of the language and of present-day usage, which is illustrated by examples drawn from a wide cross-section of spoken, written and literary sources.
