Semiotics of textscapes and cultures.

Abstract This article presents a general outline of a theoretical and methodological framework for analyzing textscapes. Textscapes are signifying perceptual surfaces that form the interface with the meaning universe of a semiotic eco-system (of, for instance, the life-world of a social actor such as a person, a social group, a community, etc.). In this sense, textscape descriptions and comparisons are of central importance for a semiotics of cultures understood as a text- or discourse-based approach to the description of meaning systems that possess a constitutive and normative status for a semiotic eco-system. The description of such meaning configurations composing the doxa (visions, beliefs, values and norms, know-how, etc.) of a social actor has to rely on a structured approach for dealing adequately with textscapes as the principal data to be studied. Research tasks include the identification of relevant textscapes, the techniques for collecting and conserving them, the analysis of corpora of textscapes or the experimentation with textscapes. In order to illustrate our purpose, we will study two examples of textscapes in a broad sense, understood as signifying 3D-surfaces of the lifeworld of social actors: a typical European open market in Vienna and a middle-class European kitchen. A third example in Hong Kong studies a modern urban communicational textscape.

L'adaptation et la republication de ressources audiovisuelles numériques

La mondialisation a pour effet de rendre indispensable non seulement le recours a la traduction, mais souvent aussi a l’adaptation. C’est en particulier le cas pour les ressources audiovisuelles numeriques et leur republication, dont l’importance ne fait que croitre. Le texte audio-visuel est en realite a considerer comme un objet semiotique pouvant avoir une extreme complexite, en raison des differentes strates dont il se compose. En particulier, chacun des plans que l’on peut y distinguer peut etre l’objet d’une traduction culturelle specifique, car autrement les informations vehiculees risqueraient d’etre mal interpretees par les recepteurs. Pour aborder cette problematique, l’article s’appuie notamment sur les travaux effectues dans le cadre du projet de recherche « Atelier semiotique audiovisuel » (ASA-SHS) finance par l’Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR).

Es gibt verschiedene Moglichkeiten, sich dem Verstandnis von Phanomenen wie “Politik”, “Herrschaft”, “Macht” oder “Interesse” sowie deren strukturellen und funktionalen Zusammenhangen anzunahern. Das derzeit dominante Forschungsparadigma verbindet in sog. “interdisziplinarer” Weise sozialhistorische, soziologische, psychologische und politologische Ansatze. Auffallend dabei ist jedoch das eigenartige Nebeneinander von sowohl beschreibenden, erklarenden und selbst normativen (moralischen oder ideologischen) Begriffen als auch von theoretischen und praktischen (operationellen) Erkenntnisinteressen. Dies stellt eine Schwache dieses Paradigmas dar, welche sich vor allem auf zwei Ursachen zuruckfuhren last: Erstens auf eine methodologisch nicht immer einsichtige Verwebung und Vermischung von Begriffen und Problembereichen, die unterschiedlichen Bereichen der Sozial- und Humanwissenschaften angehoren; zweitens auf die Verwendung von Begriffen, deren Bedeutungen bzw. Definitionen mitunter ziemlich unklar bleiben. Der grose empirische Aufwand dieses Paradigmas rechtfertigt weder den gewahlten wissenschaftlichen Stil noch die sogenannten wissenschaftlichen Erklarungen, die man zu gewinnen vermeint.
