Nonlocal optical effects on the Goos-Hänchen shift at an interface of a composite material of metallic nanoparticles.

J. H. Huang; Peter T. Leung

A vacuum layer over the surface of local metallic nanoparticles (MNP) is used to reproduce the effect of nonlocality in the Goos-Hänchen(GH) shift of reflected light from a composite material of metallic nanoparticles. The thickness of the vacuum layer for reproduced nonlocal GH shift is tuned accurately compared to the GH shift of the Maxwell-Garnett nonlocal effective medium model.

Molecular fluorescence in the vicinity of a gradient-index medium

Robert L. Hartman; Peter T. Leung; Scott M. Cohen

The problem of molecular fluorescence in the vicinity of a gradient-index medium is studied theoretically through classical modeling of a radiating dipole. A previously developed formulation involving the Green dyadic for an inhomogeneous medium is applied to the present problem. Normalized lifetimes for the admolecules are calculated and compared with those for a homogeneous medium. The results are illustrated by numerical examples assuming certain simple forms for the index profile.

Comment on "Relativistic Correction of the Generalized Oscillator Strength Sum Rules"

Peter T. Leung; Scott M. Cohen

Romero and Aucar@Phys. Rev. A57, 2212 ~1998!# have found a vanishing result for the relativistic correction to the dipole sum rule DS1 for a one-electron system. They have given a result for the dipole sum rule DS2 as well. We argue that these results are both incorrect and show explicitly that their approach yields a nonvanishing result for DS1 . The corrected result is in agreement with that which we have obtained in a recent paper, in which we present explicit expressions for DS1 , DS2 , and several other more general sum rules.@S1050-2947 ~99!06805-5#
