Microstructure of a Water Dispersible Polyester

Eastman’s water dispersible AQ® polyesters are linear, relatively high molecular weight ionomers that are based on isophthalic acid. These polyesters form colloidal dispersions in water that consist of charge stabilized spheres with a diameter of ca. 22 nm. In the presence of 5% n-propanol the colloidal particle partially deaggregates and individual molecules can be observed along with aggregates of approximately 100 molecules. A microgel - like model for the colloidal particle is suggested.
