High speed 2-phase 4/3 switched reluctance motor for air-blower application: Design, analysis, and experimental verification

Pham Trung Hieu; Dong-Hee Lee; Jin-Woo Ahn

The mechanical structure of the 2-phase 4/3 switched reluctance motor (SRM) with a non-uniform air gap make it suitable for unidirectional rotation applications such as air-blower. The non-uniform air gap is applied on the rotor shape to increase the positive torque region, and makes the motor can be operated at any rotor position without torque dead-zone. The 4/3 SRM is employed 4-stator and 3-rotor poles. The motor stator is separated with two segmental C-cores that used combination with 3-rotor poles form the flux path in a shortest closed loop. Short flux path technique helps the motor reduce the core losses while increase the efficiency. In order to verify the design, a prototype was manufactured for laboratory test.

Design and characteristics of novel 2-phase 4/3 switched reluctance motor

Pham Trung Hieu; Dong-Hee Lee; Jin-Woo Ahn

This paper presents a design of novel 2-phase 4/3 switched reluctance motor (SRM) for air-blower applications. The rotor of the proposed motor uses a uniform air gap to overcome the torque dead-zone that exists in the 2-phase motor type. The proposed motor can rotate only one direction. This motor type is suitable for unidirectional rotation applications as air blower in this paper. The proposed 4/3 SRM uses short flux path technique that achieved by means of winding configuration and lamination geometry. The purpose of short flux path is to reduce the core loss and the absorption MMF in the stator.

Pham Trung Hieu; Dong-Hee Lee; Jin-Woo Ahn

This paper presents a design of novel 2-phase 6/5 switched reluctance motor (SRM) for an air-blower application. This type of motor is suitable for the applications that require high speed and only one directional rotation as air-blower. The desired air-blower is unidirectional application, and requires a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone. In order to get a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone during phase commutation, asymmetric inductance characteristic with non-uniform air-gap is considered. The proposed motor can be operated at any rotor position. The proposed 6/5 SRM uses short flux path technique that achieved by means of winding configuration and lamination geometry. The purpose of short flux path is to reduce the core loss and the absorption MMF in the stator. The proposed 2-phase 6/5 SRM is verified by finite element method (FEM) analysis and Matlab-Simulink. In order to verify the design, a prototype of the proposed motor was manufactured for practical system.

Performance analysis of segmental type SRMs for HVAC application

Grace Firsta Lukman; Pham Trung Hieu; Dong-Hee Lee; Jin-Woo Ahn

This paper presents a comparative performance analysis of segmental type switched reluctance motor (SRM) for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) applications. Electric motors are the basic components of HVAC system, which control the airflow and therefore cannot be separated from it. Hence, a motor with high efficiency, high electric utilization, and variable speed drives is necessary. Unlike conventional SRM, segmental type utilizes short flux path, which improves electric utilization and decreases core loss in the stator and rotor that may lead to higher efficiency. Motor variables are selected to meet the requirements of HVAC system. The characteristics of the described motor are compared through flux, torque, direction, and efficiency. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) analysis is used to analyze the static and dynamic performance of the motors. Then, OMOE (Overall Measurement of Effectiveness) is used to evaluate the motor performance based on the importance of its parameters.

Design of a high speed 4/2 switched reluctance motor for blender application

Pham Trung Hieu; Dong-Hee Lee; Jin-Woo Ahn

This paper presents the design of a high speed 4/2 switched reluctance motor (SRM) for blender application. The proposed SRM is designed to replace a universal motor that equipped for the blender. The universal motor has low efficiency and unpleasant odor when operating. The blender requires a high speed motor drive with self-start ability. In order to overcome torque dead-zone that exists in single- and 2-phase SRM, stepper rotor with wider rotor pole arc is considered. The rated speed is up to 18,000 rpm and 40,000 rpm at no-load. In order to verify the design, a prototype of the proposed SRM is manufactured for laboratory test.

Design and control of a high speed segmental stator 4/3 switched reluctane motor

Pham Trung Hieu; Dong-Hee Lee; Jin-Woo Ahn

This paper presents a design of a 2-phase segmental stator type 4/3 switched reluctance motor (SRM) for air-blower application. The air-blower requires only one direction rotation, high rotor speed without torque dead-zone. In order to satisfy the requirements of the load, the rotor of the 4/3 SRM is designed with wider rotor pole arc and non-uniform air-gap is applied on the rotor shape. With a special rotor structure, the motor generates a wider positive torque region and has no torque dead-zone. The stator of the 4/3 SRM is constructed with two segmental C-cores, and there are no magnetic connections between 2 C-cores. The flux follows in a short closed loop in each C-core and has no reversal flux in the stator. The static and dynamic characteristics of the proposed motor are analyzed by the finite element method (FEA) and Matlab-Simulink, respectively. In order to verify the design, a prototype of the proposed motor has manufactured for laboratory test. The performance of the proposed motor is verified by the simulation and experimental results.
