Building transnational alliances to create competitive advantage

Philippe Gugler

Strategic alliances, which differ from traditional cooperative agreements in their contractual forms as well as the purpose for their establishment, have increased dramatically in the past few years. In the United States, co-operative agreements outnumber fully-owned foreign subsidiaries by a factor of at least four-to-one for U.S.-based companies.’ In the 198Os, U.S. firms have formed over 2000 agreements with European corporations. A McKinsey study reveals that the number of U.S. international joint ventures (i.e. the creation of a new entity) established annually increased six-fold from 1976-1987.2 In the EC as well, the number of co-operative agreements increased in the 1980s: only 46 joint ventures (JVs) were recorded for 1982, but 129 joint ventures were created during 1989. a

The role of clusters in the global innovation strategy of MNEs

Philippe Gugler; Michael Keller; Xavier Tinguely

Purpose – This paper aims to focus on the role of clusters as home and host country-specific advantages for multinational enterprises (“MNEs”) in the organization of their internal and external networks to optimize the diffusion and generation of new knowledge. Strategic asset-seeking investment has been a major driver of the internalization of innovation activities performed by MNEs abroad. This paper demonstrates the attractiveness of foreign clusters in the global innovation process of MNEs. The main assumption is that location within innovative clusters may foster the ability of firms to generate new innovations. Design/methodology/approach – This paper illustrates the theoretical developments through the example of firms located in the Basel pharmaceutical clusters which have invested in other clusters abroad. Findings – The results are based on an in-depth patent data analysis and confirm the importance of clusters in an innovation-driven industry. Originality/value – This paper focuses on the role ...

Technology-sourcing investment abroad as an enhancer of Chinese MNEs’ innovative capabilities

Philippe Gugler; Laura Vanoli

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on Chinese firms’ innovation processes that are induced by foreign direct investment abroad. The study uses a patent and citation analysis to examine the extent to which investments abroad contribute to enhancing these firms’ innovative capabilities. More specifically, this study focusses on the role of foreign location competitiveness as an asset to provide technological capabilities to Chinese affiliates. Design/methodology/approach – Patents are good indicators of firms’ innovative capabilities. Moreover, patents allow to track the inter-firm knowledge transfer through the citations of patents on which they are based. The authors use an OECD patent database called “OECD REGPAT July 2013” that compiles patents registered with the European Patent Office (EPO) over the period from 1986 to 2013. The authors focus the analysis on patents registered by Chinese multinational enterprises’ (MNEs) based in Europe because the authors assume inter alia that innovatio...

Competitiveness of the ASEAN Countries

Philippe Gugler; Julien Chaisse

In an age of increased necessity for competitiveness of nations and at a time when the world economy is facing recession, this book explores the possible trajectory of ASEAN – arguably one of the most dynamic areas in the world – as a regional economic and political bloc. The expert contributors address the industrial competitiveness of ASEAN and analyse the role of MNEs against the background of the challenges of integration. They illustrate that regional integration will only be a success if ASEAN’s linkages are broadened with global partners through negotiations of Free Trade Agreements. The book concludes that although much still remains to be done, and many promises are still to be unveiled, ASEAN’s ‘coming of age’ is an historic milestone.

Emerging countries’ country-specific advantages (CSAs) and competitiveness of emerging market multinational enterprises (EMNEs)

Philippe Gugler

Purpose A significant stream of literature focuses on host countries’ locations when explaining why firms internalize some of their activities in specific countries. At first glance, home location schemes and specificities seem to have attracted less attention in the scientific community. The purpose of this contribution is to provide a literature review linked to the specific issue of emerging countries’ country-specific advantages and the competitiveness of emerging market multinational enterprises. Design/methodology/approach The approach is to present the main theoretical developments related to the role of home countries in the internationalization process of domestic firms in general and as far as the home context of emerging countries is concerned. Findings A rigorous analysis of the literature shows that theoretical developments and empirical studies on international business do refer explicitly or at least implicitly to the role of home countries in the international expansion of firms. Originality/value The value of this review is to develop the main streams of the literature and to serve as a basis for the other contributions published in this area.

Impact of clusters on regional economic performance

Mathieu Resbeut; Philippe Gugler

Purpose – This paper aims to examine the methodology used to identify clusters on the one hand and assess the economic impact that those may have on regions on the other hand. Design/methodology/approach – The influential work on “clusters”lead by Michael Porter since the 1990s has become a tool for promoting innovation and growth at national and regional level. Even if the theory has become very popular, a few empirical investigations were conducted since. In a recent study, Delgado, Porter and Stern developed a model to investigate the impact of cluster composition on the performance of regions in the USA. They find strong evidence that industries operating in a strong cluster environment perform better. The aim of this study is to improve the methodology used in evaluating the cluster environment and then to replicate their model and apply it to a highly competitive industry in Switzerland, namely, the precision goods sector. It enables to look closely at the importance of the microeconomic environment...

Swiss inward FDI and its policy context

Philippe Gugler; Xavier Tinguely

Switzerland has constantly sought to build an open economy in which foreign actors have been a crucial element of the economic growth process. The quality of the business environment, the central geographic location in Europe and the stability of the political, legal and social system have traditionally attracted a relatively high-level of inward foreign direct investment (IFDI) to the country. However, this success should not be taken for granted. The current economic crisis and the globalization of the world economy are challenging the attractiveness of Switzerland as a FDI location. In a context of fierce competition among countries to attract FDI, Switzerland has constantly to improve the quality of its business environment in order to remain a competitive location for foreign investors.

The Competitiveness of the ASEAN Economies: Business Competitiveness and International Challenges

Swiss outward FDI and its policy context

Philippe Gugler; Xavier Tinguely

Switzerland’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) has traditionally been relatively high. The small size of the country, a natural resources shortage and the geographical location at the heart of Europe induced Swiss firms constantly to expand their activities abroad. This exposure to global markets is reflected in its OFDI. Although the global financial and economic crisis pushed the country into a recession and triggered a sharp decrease of OFDI flows, the Swiss OFDI stock continued to grow in 2008 and 2009. Thanks to a well-balanced economic structure based on innovation and knowledge and coherent government policies, Switzerland weathered, at least in the short-term, the effects of the crisis and set the path for a sustainable growth of OFDI.
