Mobile and Collaborative Augmented Reality: A Scenario Based Design Approach

Laurence Nigay; P. Salembier; T. Marchand; Philippe Renevier; Laurence Pasqualetti

In this paper we address the combination of the physical and digital worlds in the context of a mobile collaborative activity. Our work seeks to accommodate the needs of professional users by joining their physical and digital operational worlds in a seamless way. Our application domain is archaeological prospecting. We present our approach of the design process, based on field studies and on the design of scenarios of actual and expected activities. We then describe the conceived and developed interaction techniques via the MAGIC platform.

Mobile Collaborative Augmented Reality: The Augmented Stroll

Philippe Renevier; Laurence Nigay

The paper focuses on Augmented Reality systems in which interaction with the real world is augmented by the computer, the task being performed in the real world. We first define what mobile AR systems, collaborative AR systems and finally mobile and collaborative AR systems are. We then present the augmented stroll and its software design as one example of a mobile and collaborative AR system. The augmented stroll is applied to Archaeology in the MAGIC (Mobile Augmented Group Interaction in Context) project.

Generic Interaction Techniques for Mobile Collaborative Mixed Systems

Philippe Renevier; Laurence Nigay; J. Bouchet; Laurence Pasqualetti

The main characteristic of a mobile collaborative mixed system is that augmentation of the physical environment of one user occurs through available knowledge of where the user is and what the other users are doing. Links between the physical and digital worlds are no longer static but dynamically defined by users to create a collaborative augmented environment. In this article we present generic interaction techniques for smoothly combining the physical and digital worlds of a mobile user in the context of a collaborative situation. We illustrate the generic nature of the techniques with two systems that we developed: MAGIC for archaeological fieldwork and TROC a mobile collaborative game.

Modèle d'interaction mixte: la réalité mixte à la lumière des modalités d'interaction

Céline Coutrix; Laurence Nigay; Philippe Renevier

Mixed Reality seeks to smoothly link the physical and data processing (digital) environments. In recent years, mixed reality has been the subject of growing interest. Although mixed reality systems are becoming more prevalent, we still do not have a clear understanding of this interaction paradigm. This article introduces a new interaction model called Mixed Interaction model. It adopts a unifying point of view on mixed reality by considering the interaction modalities that are involved for defining mixed environments. This article presents the model after explaining its foundations, applies it to describe and compare existing systems and shows its generative power for designing new forms of mixed interaction.

A design notation for mobile collaborative mixed systems

Philippe Renevier; Laurence Nigay

Real needs of mobile users working in groups can be addressed by Mobile Collaborative Mixed Systems. But the design of such systems is a complex task due to the variety of design parameters. For example the characterization of the usage context is difficult because of the mobility of the users as well as the different types of collaboration amongst them. In this paper we present a characterization space and a notation as useful tools for the design of Mobile Collaborative Mixed Systems. Our two contributions are placed within a scenario based design process.

GestAction3D: A Platform for Studying Displacements and Deformations of 3D Objects Using Hands

We present a low-cost hand-based device coupled with a 3D motion recovery engine and 3D visualization. This platform aims at studying ergonomic 3D interactions in order to manipulate and deform 3D models by interacting with hands on 3D meshes. Deformations are done using different modes of interaction that we will detail in the paper. Finger extremities are attached to vertices, edges or facets. Switching from one mode to another or changing the point of view is done using gestures. The determination of the more adequate gestures is part of the work
