Knowledge creation in small‐firm network

Alsones Balestrin; Lilia Maria Vargas; Pierre Fayard

Purpose – The purpose of this research is to aim to understand how the dynamic of knowledge creation takes place within a small‐firm network (SFN).Design/methodology/approach – The research, qualitative in nature, was developed through the case study of the Clothing Industries Association, called AGIVEST, formed by 35 small clothing industries located in southern Brazil. This article attempts to offer a more comprehensive approach towards the creation of organizational knowledge, by shifting from an endogenous process of the individual firm to a multidirectional exogenous process within networks.Findings – The research presents evidence that the context of a cooperation network may provide an environment of collective learning, represented above all by the interaction dynamic that occurs between the firms through the creation of several types of ba (specific context in terms of time, space and relationship), which support the process of knowledge creation.Originality/value – This approach should consider ...

‘But where are the Cossacks?’: An alternative strategy for popularization

Pierre Fayard

Todays scientific and technological communication stakes are such that we can no longer be content with merely asking ourselves whether they are giving a faithful or a distorted image of the results of scientific activity, with a view to affording the modern man of breeding an extra smattering of knowledge. Another way of looking at the problem is to ask how best the popularization of science and technology can be utilized to further a particular policy goal, and what strategic decisions need to be made to help bring that goal about. If we called on the conceptual armoury and strategic models to be found in the literature of both the East and the West, we would be in line with this perspective.

ASTERIX and 2.0 Knowledge Management

Aurélie Dudezert; Pierre Fayard; Ewan Oiry

Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) in companies have profoundly changed in recent years. They have become KMS 2.0 that aim to transform the firm and are driven by a new relationship to knowledge in line with 2.0 organisations. These 2.0 KMS have implemented modes of organisation that disrupt those that previously guided firms’ performance. This can sometimes lead to paradoxical organizational dysfunctions as witnessed by the difficulties faced by some traditionally hierarchical French companies. Through a case study of Constructor and a theoretical background on IS appropriation in organizations and myths in management, we show how the Asterix myth contributes to understanding how 2.0. KMS are appropriated in such companies. We find evidence of similarities regarding knowledge and Knowledge Management between the Asterix’ myth and the behaviours and practices concerning knowledge management within Constructor. As a result, the Asterix’ myth may be a relevant perspective for understanding the obstacles, advantages and appropriations of 2.0. KMS within French organizations.
