Glucose as a Clean and Renewable Reductant in the Pd-Nanoparticle-Catalyzed Reductive Homocoupling of Bromo- and Chloroarenes in Water

An efficient and highly sustainable Ullmann-type homocoupling of bromo- and chloroarenes, including the more challenging electron-rich chloroarenes (e.g., 4-chloroanisole), catalyzed by in situ generated Pd colloids, is carried out in aqueous medium under relatively mild conditions (temperatures ranging from 40 to 90 degrees C). Glucose is used as a clean and renewable reductant, while tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH) acts as base, surfactant, and phase-transfer agent, creating a favorable environment for the catalyst. Pd nanoparticle sizes, morphology, and chemical composition are ascertained by TEM and XPS analyses.

Palladium‐Nanoparticle‐Catalysed Ullmann Reactions in Ionic Liquids with Aldehydes as the Reductants: Scope and Mechanism

An efficient Ullmann-type reductive homocoupling of aryl, vinyl and heteroaryl halides can be promoted by an aldehyde in tetraalkylammonium ionic liquids under very mild reaction conditions. This simple procedure generates symmetrical biaryls under relatively mild conditions. The ionic liquid is crucial for this process because it behaves simultaneously as a base, ligand and reaction medium. The role of the aldehyde is also discussed and a general mechanism for this unusual reaction is proposed. These results open the way to a new efficient method of Pd-catalysed dehydrogenation of carbonyl compounds.

Palladium/Zirconium Oxide Nanocomposite as a Highly Recyclable Catalyst for C-C Coupling Reactions in Water

Palladium nanoparticles have been electrochemically supported on zirconium oxide nanostructured powders and all the nanomaterials have been characterized by several analytical techniques. The Pd/ZrO2 nanocatalyst is demonstrated to be a very efficient catalyst in Heck, Ullmann, and Suzuki reactions of aryl halides in water. The catalyst efficiency is attributed to the stabilization of Pd nanophases provided by tetra(alkyl)-ammonium hydroxide, which behaves both as base and PTC (phase transfer catalyst) agent.

Palladium‐Catalyzed Cross‐Coupling of Styrenes with Aryl Methyl Ketones in Ionic Liquids: Direct Access to Cyclopropanes

The combined use of Pd(OAc)2 , Cu(OAc)2 , and dioxygen in molten tetrabutylammonium acetate (TBAA) promotes an unusual cyclopropanation reaction between aryl methyl ketones and styrenes. The process is a dehydrogenative cyclizing coupling that involves a twofold CH activation at the α-position of the ketone. The substrate scope highlights the flexibility of the catalyst; a reaction mechanism is also proposed.

Catalytic Activity of Silicon Nanowires Decorated with Gold and Copper Nanoparticles Deposited by Pulsed Laser Ablation

Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) decorated by pulsed laser ablation with gold or copper nanoparticles (labeled as AuNPs@SiNWs and CuNPs@SiNWs) were investigated for their catalytic properties. Results demonstrated high catalytic performances in the Caryl–N couplings and subsequent carbonylations for gold and copper catalysts, respectively, that have no precedents in the literature. The excellent activity, attested by the very high turn over number (TON) values, was due both to the uniform coverage along the NW length and to the absence of the chemical shell surrounding the metal nanoparticles (MeNPs). A high recyclability was also observed and can be ascribed to the strong covalent interaction at the Me–Si interface by virtue of metal “silicides” formation.

TiO2@PEI-Grafted-MWCNTs Hybrids Nanocomposites Catalysts for CO2 Photoreduction

Anatase (TiO2) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes bearing polyethylenimine (PEI) anchored on their surface were hybridized in different proportions according to a sol-gel method. The resulting nanocomposites (TiO2@PEI-MWCNTs), characterized by BET, XRD, XPS, SEM, and UV techniques, were found efficient catalysts for CO2 photoreduction into formic and acetic acids in water suspension and under visible light irradiation. PEI-grafted nanotubes co-catalysts are believed to act as CO2 activators by forming a carbamate intermediate allowing to accomplish the first example in the literature of polyamines/nanotubes/TiO2 mediated CO2 photoreduction to carboxylic acids.

Determination of Ciprofloxacin, Enrofloxacin, and Marbofloxacin in Bovine Urine, Serum, and Milk by Microextraction by a Packed Sorbent Coupled to Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography

Abstract This article reports new, easy, and rapid microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS)–ultra high performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection for the simultaneous determination in bovine urine, serum, and milk of three antibiotics belonging to the class of the fluoroquinolones, namely ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, and marbofloxacin, approved for veterinary and human use (ciprofloxacin). The chromatographic separation of the analytes and all aspects influencing the MEPS performance were optimized for the extraction from the considered biological samples. The optimized procedure required simple sample pretreatment, a short (<8 min) isocratic elution, and provided sufficient sensitivity for the determination of the analytes at trace levels in compliance with current legislation. Limits of quantitation were in the range from 0.002 (ciprofloxacin, urine) to 0.048 μg/mL (enrofloxacin, milk). Recoveries from 79% (enrofloxacin, milk) to 88% (ciprofloxacin, urine/serum) were obtained on spiked samples. The within-day (n = 6) and between-day (n = 6 over 3 days) relative standard deviation percentages in bovine urine, serum, and milk samples ranged from 2.2 (ciprofloxacin, urine) to 2.5 (enrofloxacin, serum) and from 3.1 (ciprofloxacin, urine) to 3.7 (enrofloxacin, milk), respectively, and were not concentration dependent. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study describing a fast and simple method for the determination of fluoroquinolones in bovine biological samples.

Determination of Isoflavones in Soybean Flour by Matrix Solid-Phase Dispersion Extraction and Liquid Chromatography with UV-Diode Array Detection

A new analytical method, based on liquid chromatography (LC) with UV-diode array detection, for the simultaneous determination of daidzein, genistein, and glycitein and their 7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (daidzin, genistin, and glycitin, resp.) has been successfully developed. All the calibration curves showed good linearity within the concentration range 0.02–2 μg/ml. The limits of detection and quantitation were 0.057 (genistin and glycitein), 0.124 μg/ml (genistein), 0.190 μg/ml (genistin and glycitein), and 0.410 μg/ml (genistein), respectively. Within-day and between-days precision were found not to be significantly different according to an F-test; values (% RSD) ranged from 2.0 to 2.9%. Extraction and clean-up of soybean flour samples were carried out using matrix solid-phase dispersion extraction (MSPD). The main parameters affecting extraction yield, such as dispersant, type and amount of additives, cosorbent, and extractive solvent, were evaluated and optimized. The average recovery values were between 85.7 and 102.6%. The target isoflavone concentration levels estimated in this work fit existing literature data and were comprised between 39.3 and 345.3 μg/g. The whole procedure has proved to be simple, accurate, precise, and cheap.

Highly selective palladium–benzothiazole carbene-catalyzed allylation of active methylene compounds under neutral conditions

Summary The Pd–benzothiazol-2-ylidene complex I was found to be a chemoselective catalyst for the Tsuji–Trost allylation of active methylene compounds carried out under neutral conditions and using carbonates as allylating agents. The proposed protocol consists in a simplified procedure adopting an in situ prepared catalyst from Pd2dba3 and 3-methylbenzothiazolium salt V as precursors. A comparison of the performance of benzothiazole carbene with phosphanes and an analogous imidazolium carbene ligand is also proposed.
