Texto y dibujo. La Historia indiana del jesuita Acosta y sus versiones alemanas con dibujos

– Without mentioning the name of the author, the well-known Natural and Moral History of the Indies by the Jesuit scholar José de Acosta was included in Vol. 9 – originally the last one – of the Latin and German versions of Theodore de Bry’s finely illustrated Collectiones peregrinationum in Indiam occidentalem, together with fourteen new drawings. This collection of accounts of voyages and travels has been analyzed thus far as just a collection of illustrations, neglecting the texts accompanying them and emphasizing the ideological dimension of De Bry’s work. In this essay I’ll try a novel approach. I’ll consider the illustrations as supplementary to a text; furthermore, I’ll reflect upon the relative power of the ethnographic representation of both drawings and texts by closely comparing them to one another in the light of the original testimonies. 1. El tema fue luego objeto primeramente de una “charla” final en los habituales lunchs de los miércoles, en mayo del año 2002. Fue objeto también en el 2002 de un texto mayor en Connecticut College (ed.), Modules in Emerging Fields, vol. 3 (CD-ROM, New London 2002), dedicado a “Indigenous Cultures of Spanish America”, donde se ofrecieron los catorce gráficos de Acosta, con algunos otros dibujos de De Bry. Finalmente, dicté con el mismo título – pero no con el mismo texto – una conferencia en el I Congreso Internacional del Instituto de Historia del Libro y de la Lectura, en Salamanca, el 1 de noviembre de 2002, que se conserva inédita.
