Semantic Enterprise Description for the Needs of Business Process Automation

Agata Filipowska; Monika Kaczmarek; Monika Starzecka; Piotr Stolarski; Adam Walczak

Enterprises today face an increasing need to easily access and process knowledge they produce as well as automate their business processes. This need may be fulfilled by taking advantage of the Semantic Web and Semantic Web services technologies and implementing the concept of Semantic Business Process Management. In order to fulfil this vision, an enterprise and the specified part of the knowledge from the enterprisepsilas environment needs to be properly described. The main goal of this paper is to present Business Roles Ontology (BRO) and Business Functions Ontology (BFO) which are to provide description of business functions and corresponding business roles. Both ontologies may be used within automated business process management lifecycle and are the result of our research work.

Building-Up a Reference Generic Regulation Ontology: A Bottom-Up Approach

Marwane El Kharbili; Piotr Stolarski

The aim of this paper is to develop a Reference Normative Ontology. This generic ontology is being developed in order to allow modeling policy-based regulations. Such modeling is for creating models of norms and rules and can be used by a larger framework for compliance checking. The modeling of regulations using this ontology can be showcased for semantic business process management. Our study is based on 3 domain case-specific ontologies describing norms and behavioral standards within Web portals. The analysis of those concrete, small ontologies allows building an abstract, generic ontology which is destined to cover core aspects most of other specific regulation examples. This ontology is designed to grow by integrating additional case-specific normative documents and serve as the core component of a generic regulation modeling ontology.

Legal Framework for eCommerce Tax Analysis

Piotr Stolarski; Tadeusz Tomaszewski

In this paper we describe a legal framework for simple tax status detection of transaction parties as a part of a hybrid eCommerce information system. We also focus on one, in our view more interesting point encountered during the model setup which is the case of legal knowledge modeling in such a way that it is immune to fast-pace changing of jurisdiction. This kind of quality is especially important in the tax and commerce law domain as regulations connected to those two branches are characterized by a high volatility.

Ontology-Based Retrieval of Experts – The Issue of Efficiency and Scalability within the eXtraSpec System

Elżbieta Bukowska; Monika Kaczmarek; Piotr Stolarski; Witold Abramowicz

In the knowledge-based economy, organizations often use expert finding systems to identify new candidates or manage information about the current employees. In order to ensure the required level of precision of returned results, the expert finding systems often benefit from semantic technologies and use ontologies in order to represent gathered data. Usage of ontologies however, causes additional challenges connected with the efficiency, scalability as well as the ease of use of a semantic-based solution. Within this paper we present a reasoning scenario applied within the eXtraSpec project and discuss the underlying experiments that were conducted in order to identify the best approach to follow, given the required level of expressiveness of the knowledge representation technique, and other requirements towards the system.

Modeling and Using Polish Legal Knowledge - Commercial Companies Code Ontology

Piotr Stolarski; Tadeusz Tomaszewski

This paper is motivated by three goals: more advanced knowledge modeling techniques on the basis of the statute-specific legal ontology in the domain of commercial law are presented; secondly, a number of real-life problems solutions using a kind of reasoning system show how the reasoning may be held over the ontology; finally, we point out some difficulties which may be encountered at the building process of similar knowledge models. The ontology describes fundamental concepts taken from the Polish Commercial Companies Code which has been amended in order to comply Polish law with EU standards.
