Radio-on-multimode fiber systems based on VCSELs and external light injection technique

A radio on multimode fiber (MMF) system based on 1.55 /spl mu/m vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and external light injection technique is proposed and demonstrated. Low error vector magnitude (EVM), third order intermodulation distortion to carrier ratio (IMD/sub 3//C) and bit error rate (BER) values were obtained in our proposed radio on MMF systems. Using VCSELs as optical sources in radio on MMF systems are very attractive, as they are relatively simple to fabricate and potentially low cost. Such a proposed radio on MMF system is suitable for the short-haul microwave optical link.

A Full-Duplex Radio-Over-Fiber Transport System Based on FP Laser Diode With OBPF and Optical Circulator With Fiber Bragg Grating

A full-duplex radio-over-fiber transport system based on an Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP LD) with an optical bandpass filter at the central station, as well as employing an optical circulator with a fiber Bragg grating at the base station, is proposed and demonstrated. Good transmission performances estimated by bit-error rate and eye diagram are obtained in our proposed systems. Since our proposed systems use only an FP LD as a light source for both down-link and up-link transmissions, it reveals a prominent alternative with advantages in simplicity and cost.

Employing Fabry-Perot Etalon and Split-Band Technique to Improve Directly Modulated Fiber Optical CATV System Performances

A directly modulated AM-VSB CATV EDFA-repeated system that uses Fabry-Perot (FP) etalon and split-band technique is proposed and demonstrated. Good performances of CNR, CSO and CTB were achieved for the full channel band over a-100 km single-mode fiber (SMF) transport.

Radio-on-DWDM Transport Systems Based on Injection-Locked Fabry-Perot Laser Diodes

A radio-on-dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) transport system based on injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP LDs) with four microwave carriers and large effective area fiber (LEAF) transmission was proposed and demonstrated. Good performance of bit error rate (BER) and intermodulation distortion to carrier ratio (IMD/C) over a-50km of LEAF was obtained. Signal quality meets the demands of personal handy system (PHS)/vehicle information and communication system (VICS)/electronic toll collection (ETC)/satellite broadcasting (SB).

Directly modulated fiber optical CATV transport systems without optical amplification

We propose and demonstrate a repeaterless directly modulated fiber optical CATV transport system based on half-split-band and remote light injection techniques. Good performances of carrierto-noise ratio (CNR), composite second order (CSO) and composite triple beat (CTB) were obtained over a 50-km single mode fiber (SMF) transmission without optical amplification. Our proposed repeaterless directly modulated fiber optical CATV transport systems are simpler and cost lower than conventional externally modulated ones.

Employing Photonic Crystal Fiber to Improve CSO/CTB Performances in a Two-Wavelength WDM Transport System

A two-wavelength WDM externally modulated transport system employing PCF as a dispersion compensation device to compensate the fiber dispersion and to reduce the XPM induced crosstalk is proposed and demonstrated. In comparison a two-wavelength WDM externally modulated transport system without using PCF, good performances of CSO and CTB were obtained accompanied by acceptable CNR in our proposed system over a combination of 100-km SMF and 3.6-km PCF.

A directly modulated CATV/radio-on-fiber (ROF) transport system based on light injection and optoelectronic feedback techniques, and photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed and demonstrated. Excellent performances of CNR, CSO and CTB were obtained for CATV band; as well as low BER and third order intermodulation distortion to carrier ratio (IMD3/C) values were achieved for ROF band.

A radio over dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) transport system for personal handy system (PHS)/vehicle information and communication system (VICS)/electronic toll collection (ETC)/satellite broadcasting (SB) applications was proposed and demonstrated. Improved performance of bit error rate (BER) over a-100 km of large effective area fiber (LEAF) was obtained. Signal qualities meet the PHS demand with a data signal of 1.9 GHz/10 Mbps, VICS demand with a data signal of 2.5 GHz/12 Mbps, ETC demand with a data signal of 5.8 GHz/20 Mbps, and SB demand with a data signal of 12 GHz/25 Mbps.
