Recommender system for drivers of electric vehicles

João C. Ferreira; Pedro Pereira; Porfírio P. Filipe; João L. Afonso

Being the next big step in automobile industry, electric vehicles continue to have limited autonomy which associated with the long charging times, limited charging stations and undeveloped smart grid infrastructure demands for a hard planning of the daily use of the vehicle. This paper presents an information system that will help the driver in the daily use of his electric vehicle, minimizing the problem of range anxiety thru the continuous control of the vehicle range and presenting in time relevant information about the charging stations within reach. Given the success of recommendation systems on automatically delivering the relevant information in numerous areas of usage, it can be applied in this scenario as well as with the objective of maximizing the relevance of the information presented to the driver, which should be the strictly needed for him to make his decisions filtering out the unnecessary one.

Multi-Modal Transportation Advisor system

João C. Ferreira; Porfírio P. Filipe; Alberto Rodrigues da Silva

The current work deals with the problem of growing population in the cities and the associated mobility problems. For this problem it is proposed a Multi-Modal Transportation Advisor system, based on the integration from different data sources such as public transportation systems, car and bike sharing or car pooling. Taking into account real time traffic information the system shows best option for a user goes from point A to a point B and calculates the associated trip cost. This is part of the European Project START, where we show the contribution of a public transportation ontology for different DB integration and a best path advisor based on an appropriate Dijkstras algorithm implementation.

Hybrid knowledge modeling for ambient intelligence

Porfírio P. Filipe; Nuno J. Mamede

This paper describes our research in enhance everyday devices as a solution to adapt Spoken Dialogue Systems (SDS) within ambient intelligence. In this context, a SDS enables universal access to ambient intelligence for anyone, anywhere at anytime, allowing the access to any device through any media or language. The main problem that we want to address is the spontaneous configuration of SDS to deal with a set of arbitrary plug and play devices. Such problem is resumed as a portability feature and is a critical research issue. We propose a hybrid approach to design ubiquitous domain models to allow the SDS to recognize on-the-fly the available devices and tasks they provide. When a device is activated or deactivated, a brokers knowledge model is updated from devices knowledge model using a knowledge integration process. This process was tested in the home environment represented by a set of devices.

A case of pachydermodactyly in a 16 year-old male.

J. Madruga Dias; M Manuela Costa; José Carlos Romeu; L Soares de Almeida; Porfírio P. Filipe; Ja Pereira da Silva

Background Pachydermodactyly is a rare benign superficial fibromatosis, aetiology unknown, characterized by asymmetric painless swelling of the proximal interphalangeal (PIF) joints of the hands, most frequently in adolescent males. Radiographs and MRI show only soft tissue thickening. Histological exam reveals epidermic hiperplasia, collagen fibers and fibroblast proliferation and increased mucin deposition.

Towards an Academic Social Network for Bologna Process

João C. Ferreira; Porfírio P. Filipe

The Bologna Process aimed to build a European Higher Education Area promoting student’s mobility. The adoption of Bologna Declaration directives requires a self management distributed approach to deal with student’s mobility, allowing frequent updates in institutions rules or legislation. This paper suggests a computational system architecture, which follows a social network design. A set of structured annotations is proposed in order to organize the user’s information. For instance, when the user is a student its annotations are organized into an academic record. The academic record data is used to discover interests, namely mobility interests, among students that belongs the academic network. These ideas have been applied into a demonstrator that includes a mobility simulator to compare and show the student’s academic evolution.

Academic Ontology to support the Bologna Mobility Process

João C. Ferreira; Porfírio P. Filipe

The Bologna Declaration reflects a search for a common European answer to common European problems. European higher education systems are facing common internal and external challengers related to the growth and diversification of higher education and the shortage of skills in key areas. The Bologna Declaration requires the creation of transparent curricula for European qualifications and the creation of free student mobility. This paper proposes a common conceptual model supported by an academic ontology Bologna process (AOBP) to allow interoperability between academic management systems as well to promote automation of academic management. The AOBP is defined using a UML2 specific profile for this business. This domain ontology will permit semantics mappings between different ontology variations and database schemas that may be support really the Bologna mobility process.

Prevalence of depression and other common psychiatric disorders in autoimmune diseases has been extensively documented. The association between subclinical autoimmunity and behavioural or psychiatric syndromes remains less studied. The best known example is raised titres of autoantibodies with high affinity for the basal ganglia in some obsessive compulsive spectrum syndromes (e.g. Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections). The possible role of autoimmunity in impulse control disorders remains understudied. We proposed to study the relation between autoimmunity, affective bipolarity and impulsive psicopathology. Methods 14 bipolar, 10 cluster B personality disorder inpatients. Titres for rheumatoid factor (RA), antithyroglobulin (ATG), antiperoxidase (APO) antinuclear (ANA), anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic (ANCA) and antistreptolysin (ASO) antibodies were measured in all subjects. Psychiatric assessment: non-structured psychiatric interview, MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview and Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II. Results 21,4% of bipolar patients had positive ATG titre vs 11,1% in the cluster B personality group. 28,6% of bipolar patients had positive APO titre vs 22,2% in the cluster B personality group. 16,7% of bipolar patients had positive ASO titre vs 30,0% in the cluster B personality group. None of this differences reached significance. ASO titre correlated significantly with antisocial (rho=0,435, p=0,043) and autodestructive (rho=0,461, p=0,031) ratings and almost significantly with borderline (rho=0,420, p=0,052) ratings. Conclusions The results obtained partly agree with the existing studies. As far as we know a possible correlation between ASOs and impulsive behaviour has not been previously described. The results obtained call for further investigation in the subject.

Actualização de conhecimento em sistemas de diálogo

Porfírio P. Filipe; João A. Ferreira

This paper describes an approach to improve the knowledge represented in the domain model of a Dialogue System (DS). The DS allows its user to interact, via speech, for instance, with an Ambient Intelligence (AmI) scenario composed by a set of heterogeneous artifacts. Typically, the users available tasks are represented in the domain model through atomic knowledge unit references, nominated concepts. Our knowledge-updating proposal suggests the insertion of similarity arcs, between pairs of concepts, represented by descriptors and determined by similarity measures. A case study about food is presented.
