Social perception of nursing professional assessed by different scales

Fátima Aparecida Emm Faleiros Sousa; Priscilla Hortense

The purpose of this experiment was to scale the social perception of nurses through the methods of magnitude estimation, category estimation and cross-modality matching (line lengths). The study participants were high school and undergraduate students, active and retired medicine, psychology, nursing and dentistry professionals. Results revealed that: (1) the characteristics neat, responsible, clean, careful and efficacious occupied the first positions in terms of nurses social perceptions, while useless, shameful, dishonest, irresponsible and hateful occupied the last positions on all scales obtained by the different direct psychophysics methods; (2) the scale of nurses social perception is valid, stable and consistent and (3) the rankings resulting from the three methods produce highly concordant positions of perception for the different adjectives. The purpose of this experiment was to scale the social perception of nurses through the methods of magnitude estimation, category estimation and cross-modality matching (line lengths). Stress is defined as the physiological, psychological and behavioral response of an individual attempting to adapt to internal and external pressure. This study aimed at observing how nursing students perceive stress in view of the care delivered in hospitals. Direct psychophysical methods, ratio scale and cross-modality matching were used. The sample consisted of 15 students registered in the third term of a nursing program. The ratio scale for nursing care was subject to psychophysical validation through the cross-modality matching method. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire containing 15 types of nursing care delivered at hospitals, in which the task consisted in estimating a number for each type, which would be proportional to the amount of stress caused during its performance. Results showed that permanent vesical probing is considered the most stressful type of care, followed by relief vesical probing, and that temperature taking was regarded as the least stressful technique. There is a need for further study, through other comparisons and with other population samples.

Developing a comparative scale of different nociceptive and neuropathic pain through two psychophysical methods

Priscilla Hortense; Fátima Aparecida Emm Faleiros Sousa

The general aim of this study was to create a comparative scale of different types of pain through different psychophysical methods and different samples. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the perception of pain in the fibromyalgia through the quantitative and qualitative methodological technique. METHOD: A total of 30 patients were assessed through an interview analyzed by the thematic content and through the instrument Descriptors of Pain. Arithmetic mean and standard error were used to determine which descriptors better characterize the pain in the fibromyalgia. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The result of the content analysis was the construction of categories of analysis regarding the perceptions of: diagnosis, motivation, disease, feelings, thoughts and repercussions on the quality of life. The Descriptors of Pain instrument revealed the descriptors of higher attribution in the characterization of pain were inconvenient, spreading, pulsating, uncomfortable and persistent and the descriptors with the lower attribution were miserable, demoniac, cursed, terrifying and frightening. The two instruments showed the patients tendency in perceiving and reporting the pain regarding to the sensorial-discriminating characteristics. In addition, data related to the importance of the familys and the health professionals roles in managing the pain were presented. CONCLUSION: The need to stimulate the perception and expression of patients regarding the pain in its multidimensionality was perceived. It is concluded that the management of pain must be performed considering the complexity of the phenomenon in terms of the triad health team - patient - family.

The main aim was to validate the ratio scale derived from the non-metric continuum of the intensity of the different types of pain using cross-modality matching. Magnitude estimation method and cross-modality matching were used with perceived line lengths. The study was formed by 30 outpatients from various specialty clinics, 30 physicians and 90 nurses. The results were: Cancer Pain, Myocardium Infarct Pain, Renal Colic, Burn Injury Pain, and Childbirth Labor Pain were regarded as the pains of greater intensity; the rank order of pain intensity for the different types of pain, comparing the different psychophysical methods used resulted in levels of significant agreement. The conclusion was that the relation between the magnitude estimates and cross modality matching estimates of the line-lengths is a power function, and the scale for the different types of pain is valid, stable and consistent.

Priscilla Hortense; Renata Alessandra Evangelista; Fátima Aparecida Emm Faleiros Sousa

This study aimed at comparing scales of judgements on differences and verifying the stability and agreement of the estimation made by descriptors of post-operative pain as assessed by three different samples. Nineteen subjects who had been submitted to hemorrhoidectomy participated in the study. They were randomly divided into three groups (Group C, T and F), who received an intravenous administration of ketoprofen 100 mg, tenoxicam 40 mg or physiological serum 0.9% before the surgery. The task of each participant was to assign a score, from 1 to 7, to each descriptor of the pain felt in the first complaint after surgery. The descriptors attributed to post-operative pain were evaluated by the psychophysical method of category estimation. The obtained results were: the descriptors with higher scores for Group C were intense, unbearable and terrible; for Group T, intense, tremendous and unbearable and for Group F, unbearable, intense and terrible.
