We demonstrated continuous-wave (CW) and Q-switched operation of a room-temperature Ho:YAlO(3) laser that is resonantly end-pumped by a diode-pumped Tm:YLF laser at 1.91 microm. The CW Ho:YAlO(3) laser generated 5.5 W of linearly polarized (EII c ) output at 2118 nm with beam quality factor of M(2) approximately 1.1 for an incident pump power of 13.8 W, corresponding to optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 40%. Up to 1- mJ energy per pulse at pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 5 kHz, and the maximum average power of 5.3-W with FWHM pulse duration of 30.5 ns at 20 kHz were achieved in Q-switched mode.

We report on efficient actively Q-switched Ho:YAP laser double-pass pumped by a 1.91-microm laser. At room temperature, when the incident pump power was 20.9 W, a maximum average output power of 10.9 W at 2118 nm was obtained at the repetition rate of 10 kHz, and this corresponds to a conversion efficiency of 52.2% and a slope efficiency of 63.5%. Moreover, a maximum pulse energy of approximately 1.1 mJ and a minimum pulse width of 31 ns were achieved, with the peak power of 35.5 kW.

An Ho3+-doped YAlO3 (Ho : YAP) single crystal has been grown by the Czochralski technique. The polarized absorption spectra, polarized fluorescence spectra and fluorescence decay curve of the crystal are measured at room temperature. The spectroscopic parameters are calculated based on Judd-Ofelt theory, and the effective phenomenological intensity parameters Omega(2,eff), Omega(4,eff) and Omega(6,eff) are obtained to be 2.89 x 10(-20), 2.92 x 10(-20) and 1.32 x 10(-20) cm(2), respectively. The room-temperature fluorescence lifetime of the Ho3+ 5I(7) -> I-5(8) transition is measured to be 8.1 ms. Values of the absorption and emission cross-sections with different polarizations are presented for the I-5(7) manifold, and the polarized gain cross-section curves are also provided and discussed.

Ho:YAlO3 (YAP) crystal with large size and good optical quality has been grown by the Czochralski method. Thermal properties of the as-grown Ho:YAP crystal have been investigated by measuring the temperature-dependent, anisotropic thermal expansion, specific heat, thermal diffusion, and thermal conductivity. The results show that Ho:YAP crystal possesses a large anisotropic thermal expansion and good thermal conductivity. The calculated average thermal expansion coefficients along a, b, and c axis are αa=9.18×10−6/K, αb=1.94×10−6/K, and αc=7.61×10−6/K from 293.15 to 770.15 K. The thermal conductivities along a, b, and c axis are up to 11.6, 9.9, and 12.3 W m−1 K−1 at 298.15 K. Compared with Ho: Y3Al5O12 (YAG), Ho:YAP crystal has a larger thermal conductivity along a axis from 298.15 to 568.15 K.

Dunhua Cao; Guangjun Zhao; Qin Dong; Jianyu Chen; Yan Cheng; Yuchong Ding; Jun Zou

YAG:Ce crystal with a diameter of 110 mm is successfully grown by the temperature gradient technique (TGT). The effects of annealing on the luminescence efficiency of YAG:Ce crystal are investigated, and the optimal annealing temperature and atmosphere are obtained. The mechanism of variation behavior of the luminescence efficiency of YAG:Ce under different annealing conditions is discussed and some details on the luminescence associated with color centers are analyzed.
