The masses of the K/sup -/ and ..sigma../sup -/ have been measured by use of exotic-atom x-ray transitions in Pb and W. The transitions used were free from contaminant nuclear ..gamma.. rays and strong-interaction effects. Two K/sup -/ transitions and three ..sigma../sup -/ transitions for each target satisfied these criteria. The results are M/sub K//sub =/ = 493.636 +- 0.011 MeV and M/sub ..sigma..//sub =/ = 1197.532 +- 0.057 MeV. The precision of these measurements is greater than that of any previous experiment. When combined with previous measurements they form a consistent set.

Abstract We have identified X-rays associated with stopped negative kaons in Al, Si, Ni and Cu. We report relative intensities, strong interaction energy shifts and strong interaction line broadenings. The measurements are found to be in good agreement with those predicted on the basis of a simple phenomenological potential except for the Ni (5 → 4) transition width.

A new measurement of the Σ− magnetic dipole moment has been performed at the Brookkhaven AGS using the exotic atom technique. K− from the C4 line were stopped in a laminar target which consisted of sheets of Pb or W immersed in a LH2 bath. Monoenergetic π+ from the reaction, K−+p→Σ−+π+ tagged Σ− production. The fine‐structure splitting in the Σ− hyperonic x‐rays was measured and we report here a preliminary value obtained from the Σ−(n=11→n=10) x‐ray in Σ−‐Pb. The value obtained is μ(Σ−)=−1.097 μN with a statistical error of ±.044 μdN.

An experiment performed at the AGS at Brookhaven National Laboratory to measure the magnetic dipole moment of the Σ− hyperon is described. The results were deduced from the observed fine‐structure splitting in the atomic states of Σ− nucleus. The recently published value is (−1.105±0.029±.010) nuclear magnetons.
