Bone Autografting and Allografting in Large Skeletal Resection due to Tumor Resection

Between 1971 and 1985, 100 cases of primary bone tumors underwent resection and reconstruction with autogenous (90) or homologous (10) grafts at the Rizzoli Institute. Fifty-three resection arthrodesis with autogenous grafts were performed for tumors of the distal femur (29), proximal tibia (18), distal tibia (5), or proximal humerus (1). There were 37 benign tumors (35 giant cell tumors, 2 chondroblastoma), 7 low-grade tumours (3 parosteal osteosarcoma, 4 central chondrosarcoma) and 9 high-grade tumors (1 hemangiopericitoma, 1 periosteal osteosarcoma, 5 osteosarcoma, 2 MFH).

Pelvic Resection in Bone Sarcomas

Between 1968 and 1986, 77 pelvic resections were performed at the Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli for the treatment of primary bone tumors. There were 73 malignant tumors: 35 were low grade (all chondrosarcomas) and 38 high grade (13 chondrosarcomas, 14 Ewing’s sarcomas, 5 osteosarcomas, 3 M.F.H., 2 fibrosarcomas and 1 angiosarcoma). Four cases were benign but aggressive (stage 3) lesions (1 chondromyxoid fibroma, 1 aneurysmal bone cyst, 1 giant cell tumor and 1 hidatid cyst).
